Yesterday (15 November 2017) The Game Awards updated their website to show the nominees for this years awards.
The Game Awards is an annual ceremony dedicated to “recognizing and upholding creative and technical excellence” in the video game industry. Since 2014 they have awarded a variety of games with awards in several categories. There is the coveted Game of the Year as well as Best Art Direction, Best Narrative, Best Independent Game and even Trending Gamer and Best Esports Player.
Nominees are selected by a group of 52 experts from the industry and then voted on by the public. The winners are chosen through a combination of expert testimony and audience votes and presented at the Game Awards Ceremony – this year on the 7th of December. Some categories – like Trending Gamer and Most Anticipated Game – are decided solely based on audience vote.
This year has seen some controversial nominees, particularly PLAYERUNKOWN’s Battlegrounds in the GOTY category. As an early access game, it is questionable whether it is eligible for the award and Brendan Green (“PlayerUknown” himself”) told IGN he would rather not win the prize. (In my personal opinion the biggest travesty is not nominating Spelunky 2 in the Most Anticipated category, but we can’t all get what we want.)
