Path of Exile – the hack-and-slash action-RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games – will get a new expansion on the 8th of December this year. War for the Atlas will feature new maps, new items and new gems as well as new story content.
The expansion was announced today with the release of its official trailer as well as a webpage explaining some of the new additions. Interestingly, it seems like a main point of this new expansion is changing the way the end game works, with the “war for the atlas” swallowing areas, encouraging players to clear them and play in areas they normally wouldn’t.
There is also new equipment and new gems (the way to upgrade and infuse items in PoE) and the community is already busy theory-crafting and hyping about new combos.
In addition to the new content, the expansion will introduce the “Abyss Challenge League” where players will fight monsters from the abyss coming through cracks in the world in order to obtain “abyss jewels” for more upgrades.
The expansion, like all earlier expansions to the game, will be free.
