Spyro Reignited Trilogy, is a complete remake of Spyro The Dragon, Spyro: Riptos Rage, and Spyro: Year of the dragon.

The Original Games were on the PS1 back in the day and were initially released in order 1998, 1999, and 2000  1 year apart (Believe it or not) I used to play this back in the day when I was a young lad and did not know anything of what was going on, but just had dumb fun!

Before we get started to have some facts about the game!

  • Spyro first came out 20 years ago
  • The original developer was Insomniac, and is now Toys For Bob!
  • The original name for Spyro was actually “Pete” believe it or not!
  • Spyro’s color scheme was originally green, but they were afraid he would blend in with the “grassy” environment

Now as a newcomer to this game, you might not get much of the story out of this review but I will do a short summary of all 3 games so you’re up to speed (in case you forgot the story entirely or you are new to this game!)

Spyro The Dragon: We start off in the Artisan world, which is one of the five realms of The Dragon Kingdom. The main villain “Gnasty Gnorc” which is half gnome half orc, gets angered by one of the Dragons describing him as ugly during an interview done by a news team in the Artisan world.

In his manlet fueled rage, he casts a spell to encase all the dragons in crystal, luckily, since Spyro is so small compared to the other dragons, he avoids this spell (Somehow).

With his trusty dragonfly buddy Sparx, Spyro sets out to free the dragons from their crystal prisons.

Spyro: Riptos Rage: Spyro and his trusty partner Sparx, tired of the rain in Artisans World, decide to take a vacation to Dragon Shores. However, when they get through the portal, Spyro ends up in an unknown realm called Avalar, being summoned there by Elora, Hunter, and the Professor (Yes he is just called Professor, for good wills sake we will call him Doc). They summoned Spyro to help fight the main antagonist of the second game which is Ripto (also a short guy) because he conquered Avalar.

Now Spyro must gather up talismans from different realms in Avalar in order to Confront Ripto and his minions (Crush and Gulp) and return home to the Dragon Realm.

Spyro: Year of the dragon: The Game starts out with a time of joy in the land of the dragons, where our protagonist Spyro and his dragon buddies are celebrating “Year of the dragon” which is an event that happens every twelve years when the new dragon eggs are brought to the realm.

During the event, Bianca invades the Dragon Realms with an army of Rhyno creatures called “”Rhynocs””, and steals all of the dragon eggs, bringing them back to the main antagonist, the Sorceress.

Spyro, Sparx and Hunter (From Riptos Rage) sets out to recover the dragon eggs

The Good

Spyro Reignited Trilogy really captures the nostalgic feeling of when I used to play the game as a kid. Even though they completely overhauled the graphics, I still felt like that little kid full of joy completing different levels and collecting as much as I could. The controls feel the same as they did back then with a slight change to some camera settings, with the “Active” and “Passive” settings. I found it more appealing to have the active camera to be an assist when the camera angles didn’t wanna work for me, so that was a very warm welcome!

As I’ve seen with other reviews there are mentions of a “difficulty spike” which I did not have any trouble with at all, the game (as it did back then) still rewards you fairly through trial and error. I remember being way better at Spyro when I was younger, but I might have just gotten worse at these games since I forgot the limitations of what we had on previous platforms when it came to games, whether it was the controls or something completely different.

To get more into the graphics overhaul, everything has been completely changed, everything’s more highlighted, dark areas are actually dark, while areas that have the sun in the area are lit up! It is so satisfying to see the grass get burn patches when you spam your fire breath to get health from the critters roaming around in the various worlds, or swimming in the beautifully made water textures

Artisans World looking gorgeous!

The Bad

With “The Good” comes “The Bad”

When I played through all three games, I noticed they all had performance issues on certain levels. I would get framerate drops on a PS4 PRO in certain areas or if I rushed too fast into an area with many enemies and/or textures, and also when the camera doesn’t always wanna work with you. It starts to become a chore to restart a level cause you messed up a jump due to bad camera angles and/or lag-spikes.

Verdict

The Spyro Trilogy remake is a near perfect game, and really enjoyable even though you might not think so, this can of course be different from person to person, but it was personally a thrill to still not be completely blinded by nostalgia and be able to enjoy the game with overhauled looks and still keep its old school charm.

Overall, a must buy if you were a fan of the previous games, and I would definitely recommend picking it up if you are a newcomer to the series, it caters to both.
