It’s been too long, after Christmas and a PC that decided it couldn’t handle it anymore (it might have been possessed I don’t know) Then to build a new computer, and spend too much time playing Blackjack to earn back my money ( you will get it if you have tried HellSign.) I’m ready to put my thoughts on paper.

HellSign puts you in the role of a hunter, not your typical deer hunter, but ghost and horrors everywhere that you will have to get rid off.

  • How you clear the town is up to you. You can go in guns blazing and let your shotgun do the talking, or you can plan and research your targets to use their weaknesses against them.

  • As a hunter, knowledge is one of your greatest weapons. By reading your environment and uncovering the weaknesses of the creatures you’re hunting, you can make it a little easier to slay them. The Cryptonomicon is your hunter guidebook, tracking the creatures you’ve slain and the clues you’ve collected.

The Good

‘As a fan of everything paranormal, but hate to see horror movies or play horror games. I went into this pretty unsure what to expect, not knowing what horror this game would indulge me into. If there is one thing they have done right it’s the atmosphere in this game. The city it’s dark and gritty. The rooms are separated with darkness, making it impossible to see what you will meet when opening the door. It makes it really suspense and will keep you on your toes.

It also looks really good being a 3D isometric top-down shooter, with a lot of details in your surroundings. The story is being told with comic strips with dialogue. While conversations are set with still pictures with text, but with different choices in replies. Can’t say for certain how much every reply changes the conversation, but they will give you different responses.

Step 5b - Arm Yourself - Spectral Projector

I love how the game rewards you for studying what you are actually up against. Going in guns blazing ready to slay everything in sight might not always be the best option. But rather study its weaknesses and use it against him. There’s a whole bunch of equipment you can use, that helps you on the way to clear the city of all evil.

Controls in the game work really great, with options highlighted and straightforward WASD + Mouse controls.
RPG elements don’t feel too overwhelming, giving you options to what you want to specialize in when it comes to hunting or detective skills.

The Bad

With this being an early access game, bugs did occur. Textures that popped in, or the occasional frame drops The developers encourage everyone that experience anything that’s not working, to contact them.

I struggled a bit with the shooting since enemies moved at times so fast that ammo was replenished quickly. Emptying a clip just to kill one enemy isn’t always the best strategy. Dodging felt a bit unresponsive, but I think it actually got fixed later since it felt better on the last playthrough. So there aren’t much to complain about, updates are being made constantly so small problems are getting rid off.

Verdict

HellSign gives us something that we don’t see often in games, paranormal stuff might not be new and fresh. But this is one of the few where you have to do your research to get rid of them, and bullets can’t solve every problem. If you love series like Supernatural or Stranger Things this might be one of those games that give you the same feeling. You can’t play everything at the time of this writing, but new stuff is being added frequently giving you more things to have fun with. With its price, it isn’t a bad idea to check this game out in early access, too see if this actually is a game for you, before it’s getting released as a full game when that happens.

Pros

  • Great gameplay
  • Awesome atmosphere
  • Interesting characters
  • Ghosts

Cons

  • Occasionally bugs and glitches
  • Locked at a certain point
  • A bit difficult with precise shooting
