Assetto Corsa is for many an entry-level sim racer, everyone can pick up and play. But, to find the most enjoyment, you have to be a bit of a gearhead. On console, it is one of the most realistic racing games available and can be a bit too hardcore for some. So when Kunos Simulazioni decides to make an Assetto game only focusing on GT racing, will it be too much for the casual gamer?

Graphics

Assetto is by far one of the most detailed sim racer games, It looks great with its lighting and car models. GT cars might not be the most exciting when it comes to the interior, but the amount of detail inside the car makes the cockpit view a great option. The tracks are recreated in true fashion, and it looks overall great. It’s a shame I don’t have a VR headset to really get a view of the place and inside the cars. (note to myself, order VR headset) Since this is only on PC the opportunities are high, but you will have to have a pretty decent computer to get the best settings.

Gameplay

While the previous installment focuses on a variation of racing classes, Competizione focuses solely on the GT aspect of racing. Competizione offers many playing modes from a traditional career, Championship and of course free play modes. So, if you are waiting to compete in your career and dominate or just play a few laps to test out a new car or try to hone your skills, the options are plentiful. You are able to pick from different tracks, weather types, day or night and I found it a great tool to improve my driving by selecting hard tracks and combining that with different environmental conditions to really push myself to get better. Another thing to keep in mind is with all good racing games, each car is different. While the selection of cars is minimal with limitation in classes, how they feel and how they play are phenomenal. Some feel heavier, while others are a bit more tail happy if pushed too hard. The right setup in the right situation is key it can make the car feel like glued to the track or like it is driven by two drunk monkeys.

Controls

Like the previous game, Assetto is a sim racer. It is made for those that want as close as possible realism, with an approachable setup. You can certainly play it with a controller of your liking, but to get the most out of it you will have to play with a wheel because of all the information you get from it. The surface of the road, the weight of the car and traction. This is the small details that the controller can’t give you. Might be a bit cocky to say, but if you find these types of racing games interesting I guess you own a wheel already and is trying to find a new game to use it in.

Replay Value

With the modes, it can feel a bit restricted of options, this will not be a game where you have a bunch of different modes to play in. But, you don’t have to play for hours if you just want to pick a car and drive. So for the everyday normal guy that comes home from work and want to use some hours sim racing it’s perfect. If you are one of those that want to spend hours on hours on your rig driving and unlocking hundreds of cars it might be bareboned.

Verdict

Assetto Corsa Competizione is a great option for entry-level sim racing. But as mentioned might feel to hardcore for the regular Need for Speed player. It is a sim no doubt, with only focusing on GT racing it felt a bit restricting. But, it is one of the most beautiful GT racing games, with official championship mode and with a good selection of GT cars with more than enough to set each other apart.

Pros

  • Great looking
  • Official Licensed
  • Awesome driving feel
  • Plug and Play

Cons

  • Restricted gameplay
  • Bareboned modes
