I found myself in a very hard spot to review Abzû, not because the game is way too long to play or hard. No I get the feeling that this game aims more against our feelings and environment.
If you have played the games from thatgamecompany Journey and Flower you will know what I mean. For those who haven’t, Journey, Flower and Abzû have a few things in common. Musical adventures, relaxing environment and just how they throw you in the game without any idea on what’s really going on. So what does Abzû deliver to us?
Story – Gameplay
At the beginning of the game we start off by seeing a beautiful water design and a black/yellow creature in the water. And then suddenly we can start to control this creature.
And so our adventure begins, beneath the water. Diving under the sea to see some beautiful design on the animal life and environment. But what is the back story on our character and the world? No idea, you will solve a few puzzles underway so the landscape can be more clearer in the dark areas. And around two hours with gameplay it’s over. And I don’t say that is a bad thing even though it’s a little short. I will recommend that you experience this game because of the relaxing, majestics feelings you will get by playing this game. And the audio is amazing.
But the game doesn’t come without a few flaws, the controls in the game can be a little frustrating a few times. They are simple to learn, but the camera is sometimes a pain the a**.
Graphics
There isn’t much negative to say about the graphics, in other words I can’t find any negative things about it. The design is amazing, colours, lightning effects and so on are beautifully made.
The water feels realistic and cartoonish.
The Verdict
Abzû is a game worth buying just to experience the feelings you will get by playing this game.
I will place this game in the same line as Journey and Flower, look a side the few flaws like controls, you will be surprised what small and simple video games can do.
