GC18 – World War 3 + Hands On

World War 3 is a first person shooter PC game developed by the Polish company The Farm 51. While Battlefield V is set during World War 2, World War 3 pretty much speaks for itself.

“World War 3 is a multiplayer military FPS set in a modern, global conflict. Strong teamplay, national armed forces, real locations, full body awareness, and a versatile customization system all contribute to the authenticity of the modern combat experience enhanced by other essential elements such as a robust ballistic system, advanced armors and life-like weapons.

Produced in cooperation with military R&D centers and consultants, World War 3 shows the consequences of every battle in the context of a global war campaign on a strategic war map.”- The Farm 51

I had a little talk with one of the developers behind closed doors before I went on trying the game at the Gamescom showfloor. And there were a few things I learned about this title;

  • There will be added four new maps for the early access
  • You can play a mode called “Warzone with either 32 or 64 players online
  • There will be a battle royale mode called “Recon”
  • Tons of customization of your character and weapons
  • Will be added voice overs, taunts (both funny and in use of tactics)
  • There will be no classes, only your character.
  • No loot boxes, there might be an option to purchase cosmetics/visual items in the future
  • For now only available on PC, maybe get funding for console release later on.
  • You can “free look”, when released your weapon will automatically follow.

Those were only a few things I learned during the presentation, I must say that these developers are really passionate about this genre. Because he just kept on talking, providing lots of information. As I mentioned, there are two different modes in World War 3, “Warzone” and “Recon”.

“Warzone” works just as the conquest mode in Battlefield or domination in Call of Duty. Capturing different locations at the map, combined with infantry and vehicle combat. “Recon” mode however, is World War 3’s take on the battle royale genre. Players need to cooperate within small squads to survive and capture high-value targets in hostile territory. In “Warzone”, you can choose from either playing with 32 or 64 players online, while in “Recon” there is only 32.

You might get overwhelmed over the different options available inside the customization of your character or weapon, because it is a lot. There are no classes, only your character. The main focus is weight, how much armor, what type of weapon and equipment you bring onto the battlefield will have an impact on your mobility and speed.

Hands On
The very first thing I noticed, both during the presentation and during the hands-on session. The graphics might feel a bit “outdated”. If I wanted to guess when this title was released without knowing this isn’t out yet, I would guess a release date between Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 3. But that is only by watching the visuals and environmental graphics, how the game performs is a all another story.

If you love, first-person shooter games and are tired of all the games set in The Great War, civil wars, World War 2 etc then this title might fill out your empty space. I played a 32 “Warzone” match at Gamescom, the gunplay, the pace, controls felt very stable, smooth and responsive. I had a blast playing this game, that I totally forgot about the visuals. There are few things that World War 3 does differently than other titles in the same genre and gameplay modes. Such as the no classes setup, but you actually has to earn the right to use the vehicles during the match by earning enough points. And if the vehicle is destroyed, well, then it’s gone for the rest of the match. There are, of course, some standard vehicles available at the map, but if you want that sweet tank, you have to earn it. Like the vehicles, you can earn other “Battlefield Rewards.” At the character customization you can have up to four different “strikes.” You might know it as killstreaks or scorestreaks in Call of Duty. Each strike can contain vehicles, UAV support, bombardment and more.

The last thing that impressed me, like many other games, is the touch of minor details. You can disable an enemy tank by using your rifle. If you have the aim for it though, you can shoot at the tanks optics, making your enemy firing blind. Sliding mechanics, and the prone/crawling feature that big titles such as Rainbow Six Siege use. (The crawling feature, crawling backwards while aiming, is one of the things that the developers are really annoyed by. Since they have been developing this game for so long, they were actually the first who implemented this feature, but missed the shoot to debut it. So I can sympathize with that)

For now the game is in early access, but it is set to release during fall 2018.
