GC18 – Call of Cthulhu – Hands On

Call of Cthulhu is a role-playing survival horror video game developed by Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game features a semi-open world environment and will incorporate themes of Lovecraftian and psychological horror into a story which includes elements of investigation and stealth. It is based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story “The Call of Cthulhu

The game follows private investigator Edward Pierce as he investigates the death of an entire family on Darkwater Island near Boston, Massachusetts, and discovers the impending revival of the Great Old One Cthulhu.

When arriving, the investigation begins and searching for clues is essential. Your actions will affect how the people will look at you and respond to you. You can search for clues that can give you information that again open opportunities when interrogating people. You can play the game like you want and take on quests in any given order. Your actions will also affect your sanity level, that will change how you see things around you.


During the hands on, I got the chance to play through the three-first chapters (if I were fast enough). I started at the beginning with Edward Pierce getting visited by a grieving father, that thinks there is something that is not right with the death of his daughter. The villagers in Darkwater think she’s responsible for the death of her husband and their son, and he wants us investigate to give her justice. I’m then shipped to Darkwater to start my investigation, but quickly realise that there is something/someone that is hiding the truth. Then the game started to show me how our action affects what will happened, and what I find of clues impact how and what I can talk or get information from others.


It was really interesting walking around interact with people and do small tasks to move forward to the goal. I learned quickly that the more I search and investigate the easier there was to get information from others. When talking to a ship captain early in the game, I only had two speech patterns to choose from. But after some investigation around the island, I opened up four new patterns for me to talk with him. There were occasionally times where we could aproch certain actions in different ways. Would I like to break in or maybe talk my way in, go behind someone’s back and lie or trust them and let them help me.


After two hours, I nearly finished everything that we had a chance too see. But because of me focusing to much on finding all clues and information there sadly wasn’t enough time. What I can say, it’s that the game system works, and the story was really interesting. I almost didn’t want to stop playing, because I wanted to find out more of what is happening.

Well I guess I just has to wait untill it’s release 30th October, 2018
