Predator: Hunting Grounds was playable to the invited press/influencers for the first time at Gamescom this year, and we were one of the lucky ones to test it out.
Develop by IllFonic, Predator: Hunting Grounds is a first-person action shooter where players enter a match online, four players play as an elite Fireteam soldier and one lucky player will get the role as the Predator himself.
I and four other members of the press entered a small white room with a developer each. We got our very own setup of a PlayStation, headset, and monitor, and dived right into the action while your personal developer guided you through the headset.
The first match I played as Fireteam soldier with three others from the press. Our goal was to co-operate and achieve victory by completing minor quests. As a Fireteam soldier, we had to fight against an enemy AI force (playing against NPC’s) and complete tasks such as rebooting radar stations and clearing out enemy camps. and then escape with a chopper. BUT, there is a big but!
While we do so, a player-controlled Predator is hunting us down!
The biggest challenge of creating games such as this is to balance the game. Fireteam soldiers aren’t too weak and easily killed by the AI or the Predator. The Predator itself isn’t too overpowered or easily killed off. A lot of features in this title is inspired by Evolve and worked from there.
Playing as a soldier, as I did in the first match, you have co-operated. When you spot the Predator tag him, don’t engage him alone. Each solider can choose a different class at the beginning, shotgun, assault or sniper, and they all come with equipment that will help during missions and fights against the Predator. We managed to kill off the Predator in the first match, as there was a lot of red barrels to shoot at on the map we played. This is also a way Fireteam members can get the upper hand on the Predator by using the environmental objects.
The second match, I’ve played as the Predator, my goal, kill the enemy Fireteam soldiers before they finish their missions. My abilities, climb and jump from tree to tree, using cloak while moving, heat vision and healing ability. Every ability uses power, the Predator has a battery that functions as stamina, you have to balance your engagements and attack wisely so you don’t run out mid-combat.
I managed to win my match as the Predator by hunting the enemy team one by one and by collecting their skulls so they couldn’t revive each other.
We got the opportunity to test out an Alpha build of the game, so I did encounter a few bugs and some of the controls aren’t one hundred percent fluid just yet. But hopefully, they will fix that before they release the game.
Predator: Hunting Grounds is set to release in 2020 on the PlayStation 4.
