Dakar 18 – Review

Name: Dakar 18
Developer: Bigmoon Entertainment

Released: 25.09.2019

Bigmoon Entertainment clearly has tried to opt the pursuit of authenticity in Dakar 18. The big question is, did they achieve it?
Our story section has been removed since Dakar 18 doesn’t come with a campaign/story mode.

Graphics

The graphics aren’t something to brag about these days. However, there are some minor details that do impress in a game such as this. But the overall look might deceive you, at first you might think this is a last-gen video game aka a title for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 era. In that case, I might even be impressed by the graphics. The textures are blurry, especially the environmental graphics. I know, there is little to describe as there is almost only sand, but the sand itself is blurry. Other models such as trees, building, well let’s put it this way, everything besides your own vehicle need more polishing.

Dakar18-screenshot_2

I will get back to this under the gameplay section as well, but the monotonic co-driver is a disaster. Not only is the voice acting a bit tedious, but it’s also incredibly confusing as well.
I mentioned that some minor details that did impress me, sadly those things can’t improve the overall look, but it’s a nice touch. Such as the lighting, shadows etc are beautiful to look at, and small details such as looking at your map in first person view, people counting down with their hands and so on.
5/10

Gameplay

Before you can even start your Dakar adventure, you must finish a tutorial like many other games. But be aware, this game is brutal, even on the easy/rookie difficulty. Navigating is one thing, but manageable once you learn how to read the “roadbook”. Controlling the car, however, is a whole new chapter. There were plenty of different situations where I got stuck in the mud, didn’t make the turn, crashed into the audience (I’m sorry…), those things are fine as long as there is a nice thing called a checkpoint. You can start over again manually if you think you’re lost etc, but if you drive too far, crash or simply destroy a part of your car you have to start all over again. (I really struggled with this in the beginning, making me really frustrated).

Once you’ve completed the tutorial, you can finally begin your adventure. You can choose from three different difficulty modes, Rookie, Competitor or Legend mode. In “Rookie mode”, you always have a dot on the on-screen direction guide marking where to go next, and a more focused directional indicator when you get close to the right area of terrain. To put it in a more simpler way, “Rookie mode” feels more as a unfinished arcade driving game with few helping indicators, and then comes to the “legend mode” where everything is brutally up to you figuring out the map, and I will totally recommend stopping listening to your co-driver, as he always gives you the wrong directions. This gives more challenge, but this mode doesn’t feel like an unfinished arcade driving game, but more like an unfinished driving simulator. This is one of the biggest issues I had with Dakar 18, the struggle to figure out what type of a driving game they aimed for.

Dakar18_Ari_Screenshot08

There are some diverse vehicles to choose from diverse familiar brands, such as Husqvarna. You can choose different vehicles such as cars, bikes, trucks, quads and SxS’s. And again, these models look great. But the controls and gameplay is something that they really need to work on.
4/10

Controls

There is a basic control schematic at place, that is really easy to learn. But the handling of the vehicle is incredibly stiff. This might come from the struggle between being an arcade game and a simulator game. Adjusting the settings, I even checked the possibilities to re-map the buttons, but these options aren’t available. And from what was available, didn’t really have an impact.
6/10

Replay Value

One thing is certain in Dakar 18, there ain’t much else to do besides taking on the long adventure through the desert. The lack of variation of modes might keep people away from the game once finishing the game once. I think some modes that support a short-term gameplay might help or even some arcade modes.

Two Point Hospital – Review

0

Name: Two Point Hospital
Developer: Two Point Studios
Publisher: SEGA
Released: 30.08.2018
Platforms: PC
Reviewed on: PC
Acquired: A self-bought copy of this game

Let’s be honest, everybody would like to try themselves as a doctor. And now we can! Two Point Hospital, a spiritual follow-up to the cult classic Theme Hospital, has been out for quite some time, and I’ve been working hard to keep up with lightbulb-headed patients, people who have the serious illness Mock Star, and several other more or less deadly illnesses.

Graphics

I honestly don’t know how to describe Two Point Hospital’s graphical style. It’s sort of cartoony, but it lacks charm. Misunderstand me correctly, it’s far from bad looking, it simply lacks that extra edge to become great. On the plus side, the game runs very smooth, I think I’ve yet to encounter any frame drops or graphical glitches. The UI is quite easy to understand, and it allows for a clear view of the important stats, etc.

What I really love though, is the sound design. The music is very fitting, the DJ’s small talks between songs are fun too. Most of all, however, I love the announcer; her comments with information to the clients is simply magnificent! For example “This is a quick reminder not to die in the corridors”, “Doctors needed in the doctor’s office” and so on. Every single time it makes me smile a little more.
7/10

Two Point Hospital_2

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to Theme Hospital; if you’ve played that, you’ll know exactly what to expect. Obviously, it’s lots of new features too, like panning the camera and allowing for more stuff to be included in each room. Here-in lies a very cool mechanic, which encourages you to make the rooms filled with plants, plackets, and windows. Since this makes the nurse/doctor having more energy to work in the same environment before taking a break, it might be wise to spend those extra dollars when you build a new room.

Most of the gameplay does consist of making new rooms in your hospital, in order to cure patients. Say you’ve gotten an email about a “lightbulb-head”-outbreak in the city – might be wise to build a “De-Lux” room so you can cure the incoming horde. Once you have built up the rooms needed the gameplay is quite easy going, you have to make some decisions about how to help patients as best as possible. You have to make sure everything is in order and clean. And of course, you have to hire staff to make your hospital as efficient as possible. Sure, not the most interesting gameplay, but an excellent way to relax with some gaming for a while.

Two Point Hospital 12

Controls

Unfortunately, this section is where I have to say I’m a bit disappointed. As you might suspect you mostly control the game using your mouse, which by itself works pretty good. What doesn’t work that well is putting out items in the world. For example, I found turning any item (which you need to do with the keyboard) to be laggy and suddenly turning twice because I was impatient and pressed the button again since nothing happened the first time, at least seemingly. Another annoyance I had with controlling was when I tried to pick up the employees to put them to work – most of the time I never got the prompt. As far as I understood I was supposed to hover the mouse above the character I wanted to pick up, but I needed probably five or six tries every time before I could actually do anything with them. The rest, however, works rather good, as I mentioned earlier, the menus are easy to understand, and with some patching from the developers, the controls would be great.
6/10

Replay Value

Here’s the interesting thing, as you progress through the game, you have to build up several hospitals, which all basically has the same rooms. You’d think that building a GP’s (General Practitioner) office would get boring after a while, and sure it does, but it took me probably 25+ hours of gaming time before I had that feeling. Making sure a hospital works well, time after time, is fun, no matter how repetitive it actually is. There’s really only one proper downside I can think of, the overpowered “Gold Medal Plackets”, which makes rooms much more inviting to stay in. Once I unlocked those, I could just keep placing lots of them on the wall, and everything was well. I never actually needed to make the room big, or efficient, the gold medal plackets fixed every concern my employees had.

WWE: 2K19 – Review

Name: WWE: 2K19

Publisher: 2K Games
Released: 09.10.2018
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Reviewed on: PlayStation 4

Can you smell what 2K19 is cooking? WWE is back once again, giving us a huge roster of wrestlers and a ton of modes to use them in. Bringing back some of the most beloved modes, and fixing issues that have plagued the series.  But does all the new content justify its flaws? Let’s find out.

Story

MyCareer has been a staple of the series for some years now, but never have it been better than now either. This time you start as an amateur wrestler, that has to promote himself to get people to watch him. Slowly you get recognition from people that want to be your manager, and you have to climb the tower to be one of the best. The matches and the surroundings slowly get better and better, meeting and fighting against more well-known wrestlers as you progress. Your character gets stronger as you progress, but never enough to be anything else than the underdog that has to do everything he can to win. There were moments that can’t be described any other way than unfair, where the odds simply is not in your favor. Three on One matches where you are the poor bastard against some of the best fighters in the same league. But it helps you feel like the underdog that you are, so except for the unfairness, it is a story that takes it time. It’s not like one school wrestling match then “Hey you are one of the big leagues”. So MyCareer nailed the template this time, with a nice pacing and interesting scenarios. The voice acting is mostly good, with many wrestlers voicing themselves. But there are also some of them that should take some acting classes, sounding like they just read from a script; but like I said it’s mostly good. The commentaries on the other hand. They should be better since they are the ones we have to listen to mostly. They can be a bit too repetitive at times and saying the same thing over and over or things that didn’t match. That didn’t only occur during MyCareer but in the overall game.

daniel-bryanLuckily, Showcase events are back, being one of my favorite highlights of the game as it was in some of the previous games. This time it’s telling the story of Daniel Bryan and his career with the ups and downs. You will play through some of the most important fights in his career, and Bryan starts each match with a documentary style introduction. During each match, you have objectives, that if done right will trigger re-enacted moments from the real match. This has always been my favorite part of the WWE 2K series, working as a history lesson of some of the best wrestlers. I could only wish more of them could get the same treatment. One of the biggest flaws is the checkpoints since there aren’t any on the objectives. So if you fail, you will have to play through the whole match again. It feels a bit annoying fighting through a 20-30 minute match, then to lose in the end. To summarize MyCareer is better than ever and Showcases is back so I’m happy.WWE 2K19 Daniel Bryan2K Towers is one of the newest modes populated by a roster of WWE Superstars across a variety of challenging matches, including different win conditions and fun stipulations. Taking inspiration from the Mortal Kombat series, giving something completely different to play. One match, for instance, is a turbo match where the gameplay is sped up, where you will have to fight in double speed.

Graphics

WWE 2K19 looks a bit more polished this year, being made in a new graphics engine making everything look more crisp and dynamic. It’s way more fluent than previous with fewer frame drops and stuttering and overall it feels better. Animations have been upgraded also with much approval from me, and everything around the ring also has seen a bump in details. The wrestler; some of them clearly look better, being remade in the new engine. While some of the older wrestlers in their younger versions, at times look awful and not as much as themselves anymore. It’s pretty clear that the attention to details has been put on those that are made to be used in Career and Showcases. While others that are there to fill up the roster, haven’t been shown the same love. This might be because of many of them is transferred over from some of the older games or what not. But with how everything looked I didn’t pay too much attention to how detailed every wrestler looked. I was really happy when I noticed how fluent the animation actually was, not feeling as stiff as previous.

WWE 2019The soundtrack is good, as it always is. Track after track ready to get you pumped. This time some of the wrestlers even handpicked songs to use in the soundtrack, making it only more fitting for the game.
8/10

Ronda ReyGameplay

The core gameplay is as it always has been, but some small tweaks have been made to balance it. Taunts that perform different functions, multiple grapples, striking combos, and frame-perfect counters. Speaking of counters; the system as a whole feels so much tighter compared to previous installments, and the limitation of adding a cooldown to counters is a great touch to avoid a ton of reversals. You need to make the tactical decision to hit that counter when you really need it. A new feature is the Payback system. It boosts you temporarily, encourages comebacks and contains limited uses. It can take several shapes like instant kickouts when pinned, cheap shots or extra temporary power. They’re customizable, so you can mix and match it to your suiting. It looks and feels tighter than before, but it’s also more approachable. The game mechanics are easier to understand and how to perform actions is way easier than before. It felt much better to play, and it didn’t show up ten different mechanics to do different actions.

MFfCAVJn3TVBWPYQouKSJAUnlockables come in the form of loot boxes, as annoying that might be for some. Luckily those can only be bought with in-game currency, so basically you play to unlock but can’t always choose what you want. A wrestler is also unlocked by buying them, but here you can choose who you want to buy.
7/10

Controls

Controls have seen an upgrade as well, being tighter and more responsive. Controlling feels less like an annoyance, with the wrestler doing mostly what you want it to do. The only time I fought with the controller was when playing Hell in the Cell matches, where my character wouldn’t move the direction I wanted it to do. But apart from that, it works really well, control scheme ain’t too complex and should come naturally after a few matches.

But if there was on big annoyance, it was the menus. Often I struggled to see what and where the menu was highlighted, because of the background and red light that show what you are choosing. It could at times be infuriatingly slow, and delaying a lot. Often I would keep navigating up and down, right and left with a delay through the menus. So in-game, everything controlled fine and has seen a massive upgrade. But outside the match, navigating through menus could be infuriating.

Replay Value

WWE 2K19 will give you hours of playtime, and let you do some of your biggest wrestling fantasies and dream matches. With two types of story modes, one where you are playing through your own story, and one where you’re stepping into Daniel Bryan’s shoes in Showcase mode. 2K Towers populated by a roster of WWE Superstars across a variety of challenging matches, including different win conditions and fun stipulations. Quick matches where everything you have unlocked is available to set up matches as you want them to be. Or go online and test your skills against others, take part in huge Royal Rumbles or One on One. But one of the biggest reasons I like to play these types of games is to play against friends, beating each other up. Or if it all is too serious for you, turn on Big Head mode and fight with wrestlers with heads too big for their body.

Hitman 2 announces Ghost Mode

0

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and IO Interactive today announced the addition of competitive multiplayer for Hitman 2. Ghost Mode is a unique and brand-new take on 1-versus-1 online competition, putting players’ assassination skills to the ultimate test.

Agent 47 is the world’s deadliest assassin, and the only person who can match him in skill, stealth and execution is… himself. Therefore, Ghost Mode allows two players to compete against each other online, both as Agent 47, to assassinate the most targets in a match. At the start of each round, both players begin side-by-side and must race to take out the same targets faster and cleaner than their opponent, while utilizing weapons, items, outfits and ghost crate supply drops along the way to help accomplish the overall mission.

The unique twist with Ghost Mode in Hitman 2 is that players will simultaneously hunt targets while in the same location and can see a “ghost” version of their rival gamer to track progress against their own, but they exist in separate realities unaffected by the actions of their adversary. In Ghost Mode, the player who can outsmart, outplay and outkill their opponent by eliminating five targets first, will declare victory.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 – Review

War. War never changes. And so is the case for Valkyria Chronicles 4 – a turn-based, yet real-time tactical game. I’ve played a bit of the original Valkyria Chronicles, but it’s been years since, and it was probably like ten percent of the game I played through before dropping out. It has been on my mind ever since though, so getting my hands on Valkyria Chronicles 4 I was eager to get going!

Story

I’ll have to start this section off with the bad parts, I’m afraid. If you haven’t played the previous games, you’ll have no idea what’s going on – you’re just thrown into the story. I kept getting told that “this person is mad at you for something you did”, but I had no idea why, since I’ve yet to play the second and third installment of the series. So my first few hours was really confusing, to say the least.

After a while, though the story certainly got better (and less confusing) – and yeah, the story does become pretty much excellent after that first couple of hours. As with the first games in the series, Europa is still at war, with the Empire attacking the Federation. Still being on the defense, we play as Claude Wallace, commander of squad E attempting to return peace to the lands of Europa.
7/10

Graphics

Allow me just say this clearly – Valkyria Chronicles 4 looks great! No, it’s not realistic, but everything has a relaxed drawn style, which really works for the setting of the game. In addition that allows the game to run more smoothly than if it was photo realistic.

Another great thing about this choice is all the characters enjoying distinct features. For example, Aladdin (don’t ask me why he’s named that) has a glossy crown (of the head), and excellent eyebrows. This allows him to be easily recognizable and allows for the player to distinguish him early in the game. This goes for pretty much any character, which makes them all feel unique and like an authentic person.

Texture wise Valkyria Chronicles 4 looks good too. I’d say that pretty much every single object in the game is high definition. The guns, the tanks, the environment. It all has the same style. More importantly, though, the level design is close to perfect. The world feels similar across the different areas, yet there are loads of differences between city and countryside. The calmness of the rural lands has nothing in common with the cramped urban sites. Still, it feels like they are part of the same country.
8/10

Valkyria Chronicles 4 - Screenshot (3)

Gameplay

I think pretty much any gamer can agree with me on this one; gameplay is the most critical part of any game. Bad gameplay = a bad game (generally). Fortunately, this is not the case for Valkyria Chronicles 4. The game consists of fun tactical gameplay, with a mix of real time and turn based gameplay. As the commander, you have to set up your squad, to make a war machine that can’t be stopped. It’s not solely on the battlefield you have to keep your squad on its toes, however, as training and developing new guns remain a vital part for success. Different levels have different effects on the gameplay, say that you’re fighting in a city; Of course, your tank will get stuck in the narrow streets. Scouts, on the other hand, have a great time in the cities, running around getting the jump on the enemy. However, when in the countryside, snipers and heavy machinery such as the tank, comes more into play, with long range and excellent range. Another cool feature I really enjoyed is the mechanic that allows your squad to permanently die. It sounds harsh, yeah, but luckily it does take some bad luck for them to be out of the game for good. If one of your soldiers has been shot and lost all health, you still have the opportunity to save them by simply being first to the spot. If you’re the first to touch them, a nurse comes and evacuates them. If the enemy is the first to touch them however it’s a bye-bye, forever.

What I must make a note of however is the AI. Which could be better. There are lots of times the AI simply runs past my squad members without shooting or getting shot at. If my squad was in hiding I’d understand, but this is when I’m standing in plain sight, dead middle of the battle. It’s not a huge deal, especially since the same goes for both the friendly and enemy AI, but it does take away that little extra Valkyria Chronicles 4 needs to become next to perfect.
8/10

Controls

The tank is difficult to control, I must say. It typically feels a bit sluggish. It might be just me, but it felt as if the tank couldn’t do more than one thing at a time, for example; I couldn’t turn and drive forwards at the same time. One thing I’m giving a huge plus for is the (I don’t know what to call it) light/heavy controlling when aiming. By controlling your aim with the analog stick, the character aims in a general direction, quite fast. And when you need to make slight adjustments, you can use the arrow buttons to make that final touch.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 - Screenshot (1)

Steering your squad members is a relative ease. With precise controls and a UI that tells you what you can interact with at any given point. As the game is rather menu heavy, there’s not really much to do while controlling the characters themselves. Basically, you select what action to use, which object to use it on (for example an enemy) and then press the confirm button. The menus are clear and easy to understand, while controlling the menus are precise and easy.  Personally, I liked the default setup, sensitivity and so on, and didn’t feel the need to change it up. However, that is an option for those who need it.
9/10

Replay Value

This is most likely the strongest part of Valkyria Chronicles 4 – its replay value. You have the possibility to replay every mission to farm experience, money or obtain a more favorable report. In addition, you have skirmishes, which allows for the same, without playing the story missions themselves more than “necessary”. There’s also the fact that all of your members need experience in the field in order to grow their skills. And with a squad three times the size of what you can bring on the field with you, skirmishes is an excellent way for your reserves to keep up with your first choices.
