Let’s be honest, everybody would like to try themselves as a doctor. And now we can! Two Point Hospital, a spiritual follow-up to the cult classic Theme Hospital, has been out for quite some time, and I’ve been working hard to keep up with lightbulb-headed patients, people who have the serious illness Mock Star, and several other more or less deadly illnesses.
I honestly don’t know how to describe Two Point Hospital’s graphical style. It’s sort of cartoony, but it lacks charm. Misunderstand me correctly, it’s far from bad looking, it simply lacks that extra edge to become great. On the plus side, the game runs very smooth, I think I’ve yet to encounter any frame drops or graphical glitches. The UI is quite easy to understand, and it allows for a clear view of the important stats, etc.
What I really love though, is the sound design. The music is very fitting, the DJ’s small talks between songs are fun too. Most of all, however, I love the announcer; her comments with information to the clients is simply magnificent! For example “This is a quick reminder not to die in the corridors”, “Doctors needed in the doctor’s office” and so on. Every single time it makes me smile a little more.
The gameplay is very similar to Theme Hospital; if you’ve played that, you’ll know exactly what to expect. Obviously, it’s lots of new features too, like panning the camera and allowing for more stuff to be included in each room. Here-in lies a very cool mechanic, which encourages you to make the rooms filled with plants, plackets, and windows. Since this makes the nurse/doctor having more energy to work in the same environment before taking a break, it might be wise to spend those extra dollars when you build a new room.
Most of the gameplay does consist of making new rooms in your hospital, in order to cure patients. Say you’ve gotten an email about a “lightbulb-head”-outbreak in the city – might be wise to build a “De-Lux” room so you can cure the incoming horde. Once you have built up the rooms needed the gameplay is quite easy going, you have to make some decisions about how to help patients as best as possible. You have to make sure everything is in order and clean. And of course, you have to hire staff to make your hospital as efficient as possible. Sure, not the most interesting gameplay, but an excellent way to relax with some gaming for a while.
Unfortunately, this section is where I have to say I’m a bit disappointed. As you might suspect you mostly control the game using your mouse, which by itself works pretty good. What doesn’t work that well is putting out items in the world. For example, I found turning any item (which you need to do with the keyboard) to be laggy and suddenly turning twice because I was impatient and pressed the button again since nothing happened the first time, at least seemingly. Another annoyance I had with controlling was when I tried to pick up the employees to put them to work – most of the time I never got the prompt. As far as I understood I was supposed to hover the mouse above the character I wanted to pick up, but I needed probably five or six tries every time before I could actually do anything with them. The rest, however, works rather good, as I mentioned earlier, the menus are easy to understand, and with some patching from the developers, the controls would be great.
Here’s the interesting thing, as you progress through the game, you have to build up several hospitals, which all basically has the same rooms. You’d think that building a GP’s (General Practitioner) office would get boring after a while, and sure it does, but it took me probably 25+ hours of gaming time before I had that feeling. Making sure a hospital works well, time after time, is fun, no matter how repetitive it actually is. There’s really only one proper downside I can think of, the overpowered “Gold Medal Plackets”, which makes rooms much more inviting to stay in. Once I unlocked those, I could just keep placing lots of them on the wall, and everything was well. I never actually needed to make the room big, or efficient, the gold medal plackets fixed every concern my employees had.

All in all, I am quite pleased with Two Point Hospital. It follows the same “recipe” that made Theme Hospital that classic it is today, and I can almost guarantee that you’ll have hours upon hours of fun. Okay, so it could look a bit better, but that’s not important. I would also wish for a mode where you focused on building one massive hospital, instead of many small ones. And maybe we could have an online mode where you play against friends?
