Name: Mushroom Wars 2
Developer & Publisher: Zillion Whales

Platform: PC, PS4, XBOX ONE, Android and iOS

Released: 6th of October 2017 on Steam

Mushroom Wars 2 is a simple RTS (Real Time Strategy game) published by indie studio Zillion Whales on Steam, PS4, XBOX ONE, Android and iOS. The game became available on steam on the 6th of October and features two single-player campaigns as well as an online multiplayer mode and a competitive multiplayer mode.

Gameplay

At its core, Mushroom Wars 2 is an RTS about troop management. You send armies of tiny mushrooms between your structures, or to enemy structures to initiate attacks. Your mushroom troops are also used to upgrade or change structures, and such become the main currency of the game. Additionally your “hero” has a set of abilities that can influence the field of battle, and these use an energy bar that fills up over time.

The game thus becomes a series of consideration of how to best use your mushrooms. Should you use your large force to invade hostile territory? Or are they better spent upgrading this defensible position with a turret? Maybe your hero’s abilities are best utilized on large armies? These are the sort of considerations that have to be made in order to outsmart and eventually overwhelm your opponent.

Unfortunately, there is a limit to the depth of these mechanics and it can quickly start to feel like you are just waiting for troops, and then winning through sheer numbers. Can’t capture that building? Wait a few minutes and throw more mushrooms at it. In early portions of the game this is remedied by introducing new buildings and environmental hazards, but in my opinion it is never quite enough to introduce enough depth. That said, higher difficulties hide more information (such as how many troops an enemy has, or whether you can upgrade your buildings) and thus introduce a second layer of holding onto information and guessing at your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, which helps a lot. Still, the later levels of the single player campaign can start to feel like a bit of a slog.

Replay Value

If you enjoy the core gameplay of Mushroom Wars 2 there is tons of replay potential. Each level has 4 difficulties and the campaign can be played with different heroes and abilities. Additionally there is the multiplayer mode which can definitely be fun if you’re the competitive type, and also introduces even more heroes with interesting abilities.

Controls

The controls of Mushroom Wars 2 are excellent. Being developed for a wide range of platforms with interfaces ranging from gamepads to touch screens, the control scheme is surprisingly elegant. Everything can be done with the mouse, but there are useful keyboard shortcuts to execute actions faster when necessary. Clearly a lot of design work has gone into making controls intuitive and easy to grasp and it really shows. On top of it all, the user interface is elegant and responsive, making it feel good to send your mushroom troops running across the map with their little war-cries.

Graphics and Aesthetics

The art style of Mushroom Wars 2 is very cute. The mushrooms are positively adorable at every turn, even as they meet on increasingly deadly battlefields. This contrast of cutesy art and brutal wars is shown clearly in simple cutscenes between some of the story missions which often contain dramatic scenes of battle, made somehow palpable by the wonderful character art. The tone is also set by the soundtrack, which fluxes well between cutesy mushroom-folk themes and epic battle music.
The story presented, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Consisting only of a handful of cutscenes with no dialogue, it is clear that Zillion Whales did not set out to craft an engaging story as much as a backdrop for the action. The art primarily serves the role of setting a tone and presenting gameplay, which it does rather well.

For players coming from the original Mushroom Wars, the sequel offers several new features. First and foremost it is an upgrade in presentation with new art, animation and music. It also introduces heroes and their ability to swing the tides of battle, as well as co-op multiplayer and a competitive queue.

Verdict

Mushroom Wars 2 is a fun simple take on the RTS genre. By simplifying mechanics, wrapping them in a very cute style, and giving the game fantastically simple controls, the genre is made accessible and fun on several platforms. If you are looking for a deep strategy game or an engaging story, this is not the RTS for you. Still, Zillion Whales have crafted a very good game full of endearing details and fun takes on the genre.

Before the release of the second season of Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things, the streaming service has published a mobile game set in the Stranger Things universe. Stranger Things: The Game is free and available on both Android and iOS systems.

The game is developed by BonusXP, a mobile indie studio from Texas, and features retro-style pixel art and character-based puzzle solving. The official store page reads «The game is an action adventure game true to the games our heroes would have played back in the day» and hints at possible secret content if the player can find every collectible.

The trailer, complete with an 8-bit take on the show’s main theme, sick BMX-tricks and appearances from most of the main characters is embedded below.

According to IGN there will be a mysterious update on the 27th of October, coinciding with the release of season 2.

League of Legends World Championship Group Stage Starting Today

Today, on Thursday the 5th of October, the main event of the League of Legends World Championship kicks off in Wuhan, China. The tournament has a prize pool of more than $2.25 million, 16 teams from all over the world competing and the action starts at 9:00 am CEST.

League of Legends is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena with 100 million active players every month (according to its developer, Riot Games)  originally released in 2009. Since its release, the game has seen a steady rise in popularity and is now one of the most popular e-sports around. The gameplay revolves around two teams of 5 ‘champions’ competing to take down the opponents base first, and a match ranges from a modest 15 to upwards of 40 minutes in length.

Today’s competition will be the beginning of the group stage – a 4 day long even in which the 16 teams, divided between 4 groups, will compete for 8 places in the quarter finals happening later this month. After quarter finals and semi finals, the remaining two teams will face off in Beijing on November 4th – which leaves plenty of time to get familiar with the game until then.

The LoL World Championships is one of the largest events in competitive video games this year and although rivaled by DOTA’s «The International» in prize money, it is certainly an event to keep an eye on for anyone interested in e-sports.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – Early Review

0

Name: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
Developer & Publisher: Bluehole Studio
Platform: PC, Xbox One
Release: PC – Late 2017, Xbox One – Early 2018
Reviewed on: PC

It seems like everyone is playing this all new battle royale type of game on PC. So I thought, why the hell not try it out then? For those of you who doesn’t keep track of what is happening in the videogame industry at the moment should know that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is released as an Early Access game on Steam. That means the game is still under development and are not released as a full game yet. The game is set to launch at the end of this year on PC and early 2018 on Xbox One. (There are some rumours about a PlayStation 4 release later on)

Graphics

The graphics isn’t the best out there, and it is pretty visible that they use the Unreal Engine. That is not a bad thing though, because the world design, textures and other visuals isn’t badly created. You might get a little bored with some of the buildings as there is a lot of “copy – paste”.

«Foliage»

One major issue with the graphics though; if you set foliage (grass and such) to high, you will see grass patches that other players don’t see. This means while you think you’re hiding in some tall grass, for many others you will be laying out in the open. Not a big deal once you know about it, but personally, I feel like the foliage-settings should be determined by the developers instead of by the players.

Gameplay

There is no thing as a tutorial in the beginning on how to play or survive the battleground. You are put right into the action with up to 100 other players each game. We start off in a plane who flies into the map on random locations each time, you alone decide where to jump off and land. Call it your destiny if you like, because your choices do have consequences.

World one – «Map»

If you decide to land near an urban spot with tons of different buildings, the chance of finding lots of weapons and armors are big. But so is the chance of encounter enemy teams. The key to survival might be different to some players, one is to find weapons and go guns blazing hoping for the best. Another option is to keep to yourself outside big cities and just looting single buildings or shafts. The very first minutes of the game is crucial and the tension is huge. But things get more serious after a few minutes as there is a white circle on the map that every player has to be inside to stay alive. Each time (Each phase lasts a few minutes) the white circle shrinks in a blue circle appears and starts moving towards the white circle. If you are outside the blue circle you’re most likely to die.

«that sweet headshot from long range»

There isn’t a lot of different content in PlayerUnknown, but it still manages to deliver an intense and creepy gameplay experience. One thing is mostly certain, when you finally manage to deliver that sweet headshot from long range on a moving vehicle, that gave me tons of adrenaline and testosterone. Whole aspect of PUBG tests your skill on weapon handling, tactics and survival. I can honestly say that this is a must play shooter.

Replay Value

As I said previous, there is not a lot of different content in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. But each game feels fresh every single time I start a new game. A new map has been announced, including with new vehicles and weapons. But each round might feel a little different each time, depends on your tactics.

Controls

PUBG delivers a basic control system as every other shooter game on PC. “Easy to learn, hard to master”. Same goes with the user interface, inventory and map is easy to figure out and by playing through a few rounds it all comes naturally.

Chicken dinners coming to the PS4?

0

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds seems to be heading to the PlayStation 4, as PUBG developer Bluehole is said to be in talks with Sony about a port for the PS4. This according to a report on Bloomberg, claiming Microsoft only has a timed exclusivity for the Xbox One.

«Chang says his company has had talks with all of the major console companies about bringing PUBG to a broader audience,» the report reads. «Microsoft Corp. will launch the title exclusively on Xbox later this year. Bluehole is in talks with Sony about introducing a version for the PlayStation after that.»

According to Brendan Green the possible release for more platforms will not mean an increase in price, in an interview with gamesindustry, he had this to say;

“We’re happy. $30 is a good price for what you’re getting, and this is a game that could last for five or ten years. You’re buying into something bigger than just a year-long game.»

Heavily inspired by the movie Battle Royale, PUBG puts 100 players on an island, where they need to gather supplies, before they fight against each other, while the safe zone on the map becomes smaller and smaller every few minutes, and only one person (or team) can come out with a chicken dinner in hand.
