Ulvespill @ Gamescom 2018

We experienced a lot during the annual video game event in Cologne, Germany this year. With more than 370,000 visitors from 114 countries, over 1000 exhibitors from 56 countries stuffed inside a 200,000 m² large building, it sure was packed with people.

But we had a lot of different opportunities to interview, talk and test new and old titles at Gamescom as well. Here’s “short” list of all of the titles we visited:
(This list will be updated, as soon as the rest of the articles is published)

A lot of impressions there, but what did the staff members think about Gamescom?

“Obviously, with it being my first time at Gamescom, the first impressions was huge. For me who thought that SpillExpo and Desucon had a high attendance, seeing the public areas for the first time was purely overwhelming. It was a great experience, though – and I’ll take the trip to Gamescom again, for sure!” – Chloe Skovlund

“Gamescom delivered just like last year, but we saw a little more pressure from the crowd this year. A lot of exciting titles we could try on the showfloor, if you loved to wait in line” – Joakim Ulvær

“Considering it was my first year at Gamescom, I don’t have anything to compare it with, but it was just as good as I expected it to be. Both the exhibitors and the participants delivered as far as I’m concerned and helped making GamesCom just as I had hoped!” – Axel Aubert

“Gamescom is a huge event I love to attend every year, not only can I try new video games. But meeting up with people inside the industry is incredible exciting!” – Kim Hansen

There is a lot to take in when entering Gamescom, what did our fellow staff members think. Their best and worst experience, most exciting title etc.

Seeing Joakim trying to open a gigantic Kinder-egg, resulting in it exploding in his hands, showering the entire room with fragments of chocolate, made me literally lose my breath laughing. Two titles really surprised me! Trancendence VR and Two Point Hospital really delivered way above my expectations! – Axel Aubert

Meeting Michel Koch and Jean-Luc Cano to chat about Life is Strange 2 was a dream come true, so nothing could ever beat that. I will say that the meeting with Koji Fox, Masayoshi Soken and Naoki Yoshida from the Final Fantasy XIV team came really close though.

The Suicide of Rachel Foster is definitely a game that’s right up my alley, which I didn’t know about before seeing it at Gamescom. From the titles I had heard of, I was pleasantly surprised by Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, which I highly doubted I’d find any fun – I was proven wrong there! – Chloe Skovlund

A fun experience, when Axel threw the key to the apartment out of the window from the second floor, to end up throwing it 90 degrees and hit the window to the neighbor. The key got stuck in the windowsill dems, incredibly funny, having to knock the door for the neighbor of an apartment you rent to say that our key is outside your window and if we please could get it back!

The title that surprised me the most must have been Gris. Little because of the name, but also for its beautiful and relaxing gameplay. – Joakim Ulvær

Meeting Maul Cosplay is for sure one of the best moments this year (besides meeting up our PR contacts of course). Not sure if this is a good or bad experience, but having to apologize to other people because one of our staff members snored extremely loud when we travelled with the ship over-seas was something else, but fun though.

There were a lot of good titles this year, but The Dark Pictures Anthology and World War 3 took me off guard, those titles really surprised me! – Kim Hansen

Last but not least, we decided to travel to Gamescom by car. Driving from Norway to Cologne, Germany. It took a few hours, and when four people is cramped inside a small Volvo V60, thing’s weren’t exactly comfortable.

“The road trip was extremely long… And being placed in the back seat was a cramped experience. Pro-tip: Don’t ever use a Volvo V60 for road trips – I suggest airplanes instead. Or a train. Or perhaps walking. It was a really fun trip though, with catching Pokémons, bugging Joakim and listening to guilty-pleasure music. – Chloe Skovlund

“I was asleep for the most of the time during our roadtrip, but in our way back home. We decided to visit Scandinavia Park, a 24hour open shop near the border of Denmark. But when we arrived, they had decided to change the opening hours the day before we arrived. So no Unicorn Fruit Loops for me!” – Kim Hansen

The roadtrip was a bit more fun this year, since we were more people who went. A little more exciting car to drive this year too, to drive at 230 km/h on the autobahn was an experience to say the least. It was not just a boring Volvo, it was a V60 that might be “a little” cramped, but it was quick and fun to drive. Even with 400 +++ kg with luggage and four heavy vikings. – Joakim Ulvær

The roadtrip was… interesting. Three of us can only be considered as “a bit above average” and the space was lacking in uncomfortable areas. It could have been worse, we could have had car-trouble and so on, but I have to admit that my body hated me several days after the 16 hour journey. It was NOT all bad, though! We had a lot of fun as well. – Axel Aubert

We’re saying goodbye to this years “Heart of Gaming”, and welcomes next years Gamescom! More pictures below.
