Red Dead Redemption 2 – New Reveal

0

New trailer announced from Rockstar Games regarding the sequel to Red Dead Redemption. As seen in the trailer will Red Dead Redemption launch during spring 2018.

So we have to wait a little more before we can get our cowboys boots on and go guns blazing with our revolvers.

It might seems like we’re going to play multiple characters, just as we did in GTA V. But do we play as a bad guy this time?

We sure hope for more intel in the months to come

theHunter: Call of the Wild
theHunter: COTW

I just found out that I do not have the patience to become a hunter, but the nature sure seems nice.

Graphics

The graphics in theHunter: Call of the Wild is good, but not as breathtaking as I’d like. When the whole game focuses on wandering around in the woods it becomes very annoying that the trees in the distance looks so two-dimensional, and not very sharp either. I’d also like to point out that when you’re out in nature, not all trees look exactly equal, so I don’t understand why I can’t see any differences between 95% of the trees across the map.

Gameplay

Obviously the gameplay is focused on; walking, tracking, and shooting. And unfortunately I found it extremely boring after a couple of hours. The process is too repetitive, it doesn’t matter what you’re hunting. A bear, a deer or a coyote, they all act pretty much the same. All the animals are also so sensitive to sound. I kept being heard by the animals, even though I hadn’t moved more than a couple of inches in the last hour. A cool feature however is the wind tracking. Short summary; never let the animal you’re hunting be down-wind. They’ll smell you immediately and scoot off to a safer place. This means you’ll have to use several of yours tools to gain the advantage you need. Be it using a “fake-mating call”-box or a scent-remover, you will want that extra couple of meters you can get closer to the prey.

There are also a selection of different guns, some are handguns, some are shotguns and some are rifles. You can also choose to use the bow and arrows, if your heart desires. It is cool that they include a few different options, but I didn’t really understand why. I kept using a rifle, because the bow and arrow felt too used up in other games, and I don’t think shooting a deer on 200 meters range is possible with a shotgun. I feel like there should have been more rifles (not that it was few), and I think it should have been more focus on letting the player get a good feeling about the capabilities of each rifle, instead of broadening to all the guns that ended up in the game.

Story

There are some story missions, but these are all just in the background, and doesn’t really do much of themselves in the game. It’s an okay feature to have, but as almost all of them revolves around hunting and/or tracking footprints they don’t really offer much other than some voicing. Shooting a deer doesn’t get any different just because you get a bit more money, and a line with “Thank you”.

Controls

For me the controls were far too sensitive on a Dualshock 4, even on the lowest setting. It probably works much better on PC, where you can play with a mouse. I’m also wondering why the photo-mode is activated by holding down the square-button (which with a press makes you activate a track, for example), instead of for example the touchpad? The touchpad is used for bringing up the map, but the options-button does exactly the same, and the map just isn’t that important.

Voice Actor strike ends

0

It’s been almost a year, but now it seems like the voice actor strike against 11 game companies is ending, a press release from Screen Actors’ Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) said today. Voice actors was demanding residual payments, better protections for their voices, as well as more transparency about what projects they are a part of. The tentative agreement supposedly involves much, but not all, of these demands.

The press release reads:

“The terms of the tentative agreement, which was reached early Saturday morning, include a new bonus structure that provides an additional payment to performers. The bonus payment, which is due no later than the release date of the game, is based on the number of sessions worked on each game. The deal also contains an employer commitment to continue working with SAG-AFTRA on the issue of vocal stress during the term of the agreement.”

Although the residual payments SAG-AFTRA wanted haven’t seen to have made it into the new tentative agreement, voice actors will receive bonus payments “beginning with $75 for the first session, and totaling $2,100 after 10 sessions worked”. It’s not much, but it’s (a lot) better than nothing.

“The bonus payments we have now are significantly larger now than what we had 11 months ago. And the existence of additional payments beyond your session fee is in the video game world for good, both in our high-budget and independent promulgated agreements.” – Keythe Farley, the chair of SAG-AFTRA’s Interactive Negotiating Committee.

The agreement will not include some of the things the companies allegedly wanted, which included:

“A provision that would have fined performers for being late or distracted at session, another that would have required agents to submit performers for low-paying ‘atmospheric voice’ sessions or face fines, and a possible revocation of their union franchise, and another that would have allowed employers to use their permanent staff to do covered work outside of the collective bargaining agreement.”

The strike took a toll on some voice actors’ ability to continue working with their favorite roles. Most prominently, Ashly Burch’s reprisal as Chloe Price in Life is Strange: Before the Storm. In an interview, Burch said “It feels like you are forced to put your kid up for adoption” and that she was “heartbroken”.

The new deal is a small (but well-deserved) victory for video game voice actors, who wanted their effort recognized in a difficult, sometimes thankless and, most of all, demanding field of work.

Satoru Iwata lives on in the Nintendo Switch

0

He was one of the most loved persons in the video game industry; Satoru Iwata, the programmer who worked his way through the ranks to become president of Nintendo, until he passed away in 2015. Now it seems like his spirit lives on through an Easter egg hidden in the Nintendo Switch.

Satoru Iwata
Satoru Iwata – Direct to you

Over the weekend, several people in the Switch hacking scene dug through some “suspicious” code, and reportedly found a way to unlock a NES-emulator hidden deep inside the Switch. The emulator itself is called Flog and is seemingly tied to two things; the date 11th of July – the date Mr. Iwata passed away. And a special Joy-Con gesture that looks a lot like the “direct to you”-motion, which Mr. Iwata famously performed during many of the Nintendo Direct presentations.

Now, the name of the emulator, Flog. If you reverse that you will end up with the word “golf”. And in 1984, Mr. Iwata programmed a game for the NES with that exact name. To make the Easter egg work however, you will need either a brand new Switch – which has never been connected to the internet, as this won’t allow you to set the date to 11th of July. Or you can wait until the actual 11th of July to come around.

Nintendo is yet to confirm or deny these rumours. However there is quite a few videos of the Easter egg out on YouTube already, which all seem quite genuine. And it would be a very cool Easter egg indeed. So here’s to hoping it is real!

“DONTNOD will suck your blood”

We got the chance to take a look at DONTNOD Entertainment’s next big project; Vampyr. And from what I’ve could see, DONTNOD will suck your blood if they get the chance so they can improve their skill tree. Let me tell you what I mean about that;

Vampyr-07

Vampyr is an action-RPG game developed by the people behind “Remember Me” and “Life is Strange” by using the Unreal Engine 4.

The setting is set in early 20th-century Britain with a lethal Spanish flu in streets. But the streets are not just filled with disease, it’s also packed with violence and fear as well, and of course vampires. The presentation was packed with “Alpha Gameplay” and few details of different aspects of the game, such as the skill tree and how your actions conflicts with the storylines of the people in the city among others. You play as recently turned doctor, and that might give a few moral questions of your actions sometimes.

What really got my interest is the choices you have to make during your playthrough and how your choices matter. Since you’re a vampyr you’ll need blood, and you also need blood to improve your abilities and buy new skills from the skill tree. How do you acquire blood? Well by sucking it out of people, but who do you choose to kill? A murderer with low blood health and little experience for you, or the nice lady who just wants to keep her son out of jail but she got that sweet healthy clean blood with loads of experience for you?

Who you choose to kill will matter to the society and storylines of different kinds of characters in the game.

Call of Duty: WWII @ Gamescom 2017

We got our hands on the next Call of Duty

As you might already know, Activision is releasing a new Call of Duty game this year. And this year is Sledgehammer Games turn with Call of Duty:WWII. Sledgehammer gave us an all new multiplayer trailer during E3 this year. But now we finally got our hands on the gameplay as well, and I must say I’m truly impressed.

I got the chance to play two different game modes during my time on the regular multiplayer mode; the familiar Team Deathmatch and the new War mode.

CoD_WWII_Gamescom_MP_03_WM_1503422602

And I am incredibly happy to see what Sledgehammer have done to the franchise. For me they have succeeded with bringing Call of Duty “Back to the ground”. The gameplay is fluid and the most important thing “stuck to the ground”, it felt like the gameplay was given me the chance to really play the game like I wanted to play it and with my skillsets. Not depending on lucky shots and bunny jumping everywhere.

Diving is back! And I couldn’t stop diving around, it was too much fun to dive away from the danger or just testing how the fall damage is with diving down the hill (Not taking damage there by the way)

The Create – A – Class system was announced removed at E3 this year, instead they are putting in a new system called Divisions. And during my playthrough approximately 90 percent was playing as the Airborne divisions, so they might want to do something on that class as it might be a little overpowered with the SMG. (I’m guilty of being one of the 90 percents)

Gamescom2017 – Gran Turismo Sport – Hands On

0

First day of Gamescom 2017 is over with a lot of games seen and played. Sony didn’t have any conference this year, but many of their games are available to play this week. One of those games that we have had a chance to test is Gran Turismo Sports. With a setup of wheel and pedals it was just to jump in and play. It was five tracks available, one of which was a rally track. Over 30 cars was available for me to choose, everything from old classics to the newest in the motorsport world. I wanted to test with a RWD car and ended up with a BMW M4 with approximately 425 bhp. Not the fastest one available, but powerful enough to maybe burn some rubber on Nürburgring. Turned off all assist and I was ready to drive. And Polyphony once more show why they have been the king of racing games for a decade. The cars feels great when driving on tarmac, and you feel the weight of the car in every corner. If you push it too hard you will lose control and have to fight with the car not to spin out. Driving too fast into a corner will make the car understeer. This is the kinda things you have to think about when driving simulator style (no assist). If you want to just enjoy racing there’s many options to make it more enjoyable for the casual gamer. First impression is that Gran Turismo Sport will be a great racing game for us that loves cars.

Gran TurismoSport will be available 3rd October on PlayStation 4

Gamescom2017 – Cuphead

0

cuphead_600x348_edge_browser

Nowadays it’s not easy to be original when it comes to video games, with games borrowing mechanics from each other and  sequel after sequel. StudioMDHR Entertainment Inc. wants to be original to give us something new but feels like the old games

“Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or local co-op) as you traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets while you try to pay your debt back to the devil!” –  StudioMDHR Entertainment Inc

Cuphead controls like a dream it maybe looks like a old game, but feels like a new one. It’s tight and precise. And is easy to learn. One button to jump, one to shot and one to dash. Bosses feels like the one we are used to from the 80’s and 90’s. There is a pattern and you have to find it out, to know when to attack.

Cuphead will be available 29 September
