Name:FIFA 19 Developer: EA Sports Publisher: Electronic Arts Released: 28.09.2018 Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Reviewed on: PlayStation 4 Pro Acquired: A copy of this game was provided by a publisher for review purpose
FIFA 19 has been launched, and this year EA Sports has acquired the license to UEFA Champions League, which might be the biggest overhaul the series has had in the last few years. New of this year is also the feature “active touch”, which allegedly allows for even more control. Does EA Sports still control the footballing throne? Time to find out.
Story
“The Journey: Champions follow three heroes with their own distinct stories. Guide Alex Hunter, Danny Williams, and Kim Hunter through their respective journeys as they reach some of the most significant moments of their careers. As their stories intertwine and occur simultaneously, switch between all three characters at any time to change up your experience.” – About the mode
Where to start with this year’s The Journey? I didn’t play last year’s story segment, so the start was a little confusing. That confusion soon dispersed, and I was able to get more into the story. Personally, I find the story part of FIFA 19 (or FIFA in general) to be a little unnecessary. There’s nothing really wrong with it being a part of the game of course. But I play FIFA for the on-pitch experience, I really don’t need to be an icon outside of the pitch. Technically though, The Journey seems stronger than ever, with things to do, choices to make, and training to attend.
As usual, there’s also a manager mode, and be-a-pro mode, which is the same procedure as last year. I feel like it might be time for focusing a bit more on these modes EA, as these haven’t really changed at all the last couple of years. They’re both relatively good modes, but it’s just more of the same, a nothing new to be offered. 7/10
Graphics
First and foremost, the game simply looks awesome. The grass looks lovely, the stadiums even better and the players – best of all. By all means, it’s not that every single player looks exactly like themselves. For example, none of the players of by beloved Stabæk has scanned faces, but they nevertheless have some way of being recognizable. When it comes to famous players, like Ronaldo or Messi, the similarity to their real-life counterparts is close to perfect. No, it’s not a revolutionary experience compared to last year’s edition, but it’s a steady improvement in all areas, and that’s more than good enough by me. One more thing though, UEFA Champions League – now a part of the FIFA series. The work on this new addition is well done. Sure, there’s one or two things I don’t find necessary, and a few things that could be changed, but for a first try, it sure is a good one! 9/10
Gameplay
If you’ve played any of the last editions of FIFA you’ll know what to expect from this game, and luckily, you won’t be disappointed. Once again, it’s not a revolutionary experience, but it’s a steady improvement. New of this year is “Active Touch”, a feature which allows you to receive, kick and move the ball in more ways than before. It also allows for more control and new ways to get around the defenders. Fortunately, it didn’t take long to get into the system, only a couple of matches in, and I found myself being able to use this new feature to my advantage, instead of just fooling around with it.
A cool new feature this year is “Survival mode” where the winning team gradually loses players, which allows for huge tactical differences. For example, you could go all out attack from the start, but then find yourself at a disadvantage with fewer players later on. Or you could play it safe, and hope for a goal in the very last minute, in order to keep all 11 of your selected warriors on the pitch. Time and again I found myself saying “I’ll just give it one more go” because this was simply put; hella fun! And then, there’s the online part of FIFA 19. Which isn’t very different from FIFA 18, let that be clear. There’s some new stuff though, for example, “Division Rivals” where you are matched against opponents with roughly the same skill level, and once you learn to master more sides of the game, you may move up a division at the end of each week.
There’s really only one thing I miss, more focus on women. Misunderstand me correctly, which’s in the game is really good, but there are no spectacular new features. It’s more of the same, not that it’s a bad thing, mind you. For next year EA, please let there be more women. I want a career mode in the female leagues. I want to be a female manager. I want more women represented in this fantastic sport! 8/10
Controls
I’ve always found the controlling in the FIFA series to be really good. And luckily, FIFA 19 is no different. You have the same system for controlling your players as before, now adding on the “active touch” feature, which you can read more on above. I realize I’ve used this phrase too many times already, but the same goes here; it’s a steady evolution from last year’s edition. 8/10
Replay Value
This might sound self-explanatory; of course, soccer is about playing loads of matches and try to win as many as possible. As luck would have it, FIFA once again find themselves to make each and every match feel unique. Many of the teams have their own style of playing, and you’ll need a different approach when meeting Brighton than when you met Arsenal last week.

Name:Transference Developer: Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with SpectreVision Publisher: Ubisoft Released: 18.09.2018 Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR, Xbox One Reviewed on: PlayStation 4 Acquired: A copy of this game was provided by a publisher for review purpose
When visiting Gamescom 2018, I had the pleasure of trying Transference and the experience was one I carried with me for a long time afterward. When I heard we had a chance to write a review for the game, I was the first to volunteer. Games like this are right up my alley and the expectations were high!
When playing the game at Gamescom, I played it in VR mode, and it has to be said that this game is meant to be experienced this way. Unfortunately, I don’t have VR at home at the moment. So I played through the game normally, but at least I am familiar with how everything works when played in VR.
Story
In Transference, there is no narrative story and very little introduction as far as the game goes. Most of the story is up to you to discover by playing it, so there is very little I can say about the actual story without spoiling the experience.
What I can say though is that Transference is a very dark psychological thriller filled to the brim with details and small pieces of information that throughout the game gave me chills many times and really kept me on the edge of my seat, sweating. The subtle hints everywhere fills Transference to the brim with an atmosphere that will be the envy of many other games.
The only bad thing I can say here is that it is short. I played through my first playthrough in just five hours. It left me wanting so much more, I really did not want the game to be over. I was not ready for it to be over. I still had so many unanswered questions!
But no, sadly it was over, and even after watching a friend of mine playing through it I have questions and it feels somewhat… Unfinished? What this game NEEDS to get a full score here, is a DLC with more explanation and a more comprehensive ending. Please, dear developers… PLEASE! 6/10
Graphics
The graphics in this game is not the most realistic I have ever seen, but it is without a doubt better in VR than it is on my TV. What the game lacks in high-tech graphics though, it makes up for in the amount of details around in the areas you explore. The graphics are not at all bad, and it truly gives you the feelings I bet the developers are aiming for. At least I got them. I had hoped I would be able to get even more details though, read entire letters and get more details about certain objects.
I really liked the movies implemented in Transference, it really added to the whole story. The contrast between the recorded videos and the somewhat unpolished graphics are very sharp, making the graphics look even worse. This simulated version of reality is supposed to be glitchy and rough, so maybe it is deliberate? Whatever the intention, the effect is good and I must say the whole atmosphere delivered in Transference is very, very well done and the graphic designer crew should be proud of their work. 8/10
Gameplay
A lot of the gameplay consists of walking around in a rather small apartment, trying to figure out what to do next. I know I just made that sound incredibly boring, but it isn’t. At times it is freaking frustrating, especially when you don’t know what you are supposed to do and the minor clues around are not noticed or comprehended.
The game also offers a lot of puzzles, minor ones that are not overly challenging, but they give you something to do while exploring and add to the gameplay as a whole but leaves nothing for the replay value of the game. My main complaint about the gameplay though is the feeling that although Transference is well made, it does not really offer me anything… new. Not in the gameplay area, it is just a regular walking simulator and the puzzles have all been done before. That being said, Transference still offers you a good time playing it, I just… had higher hopes. 7/10
Controls
There really isn’t too much to say about the controllers, they work fine and are very easy to learn and uncomplicated. My only little note here is the fact that I could not move faster through some of it, but I know that it is deliberately made that way, to make sure I did not miss a lot of the details around me. 9/10
Replay Value
This is a game that has to be played twice, because some of the questions you without a doubt got after your first playthrough can be answered in the detailed environment, and you probably did not find all the video logs and cut-scenes the first time around.
However, it is probably not an enjoyable game many more times after this. 6/10
We had our own booth during The Link, a minor gathering for the locals in Svelvik, Norway. Don’t get me wrong, when I say minor, I mean approximately 200 people. The Link had their own competitions, such as Rocket League and CS:GO. And Air E-Sport won the Rocket League competition, bringing 3000 NOK home. But the most surprising win at The Link must have been the mix E-Sport team who won the CS:GO tournament against all odds. All of the professional teams were taken off guard, and the mixed team could take 15000 NOK home.
Luckily for the rest of the gamers who attended The Link, who ain’t professional, could always visit our booth to compete in our minor competitions. We held competitions in Quake Champions, Destiny 2, Fornite and we also collaborated with The Link with FIFA tournament. We also had a few different competitions, challenging Ulvespill staff members in different video games, finding Pikachu who always manages to escape our booth. (One time he hide in the freezer near the kiosk!)
Destiny 2 and Quake Champions, besides locating Pikachu, were the most popular competitions at our booth. In our Destiny 2 competition, we held a 1v1 rumble elimination matches in ‘Midtown’. Where Troy got the first place again, he also won our Quake Champions tournament last time we were on The Link.
The first place won Ulvespill merchandise such as a coffee cup and a mousepad. He also won Destiny 2 T-Shirt and Destiny 2 Cards as well as a full game code for Destiny 2 on PC.
Even though Troy won our Quake Champions tournament last time, he met a huge struggle this time. As his opponents were strong! The best part of this competition described by the attendees was that everyone won something during this tournament.
Mi5 Communications, who is our PR contact between Bethesda and us gave us a huge amount of digital codes, such as Champions packs, 1xBackpack, and 2000 in-game credits.
Besides different types of competitions, The Link also had their share of cosplayers, streamers and local football players who visited the event during the weekend. Streamers such as RubenGKS who streamed our Quake Champions tournament (video above) had their own «studio setup». The Link also proved this year, that this event is for everyone! The age difference was from three weeks old to *not going to spoil the age* 50+.
We had a blast during this event, and we can’t wait to come back next year!
We will also like to thank our sponsors during this event, sponsoring us video game copies, merchandise etc that we could use in our competitions/giveaways!
