Developer: Maxis

This will not be a normal review regards our “review layout”, because The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs is a expansion pack for The Sims 4 and not a standalone title. (You’ll need a copy of the original game as well as the Cats & Dogs copy to play this one)
Same as previous Sims titles, this expansion pack wasn’t exactly a big surprise when announced. Even with the Maxis studio closed by EA (they will continue to release planned DLC’s before full closure), have they managed to deliver an excellent and challenging experience for all the Sims fans out there? Let’s find out:
The good parts
So let’s begin with all the things that’s good about the Cats & Dogs expansion for Sims 4. The general character design on the animals is brilliant, it’s not very realistic of course but its impressive and fits very well in the Sims universe.
One of the best aspects of this expansion has to be the “Create a Pet” mode. You have a massive array of different breeds to choose from for both cats and dogs, while allowing the mix of breeds as well. And like creating a new “human” sim, you can create a whole new breed by giving it new ears, nose etc and you can fool around in the DNA section as well.
Playing the role as a veterinary in this expansion is well presented. I was afraid that I had to do all the administrative part as the veterinary clinic is placed beneath the “shop” section.
One thing is pretty good in this expansion, and that is the personality on the animals and the interaction “from the player”. Going for walks and exploring the world with your pet was a fun touch. Especially if one of the neighbor dogs had the extra smell during “the mating season”.
The bad parts
There is a few things about this expansion pack I dislike, and the biggest issue is that the whole expansion itself it’s “too small” compared to the Cats & Dogs expansion for The Sims 3. I miss a few more option of interactions with the animals. It might get a bit boring in “the long run”.
The touch with the added veterinary clinic was good at first, but then I feel like they missed the point with this in this expansion. By that I mean it had been better if they added this in the “Go to work” expansion instead. Training employees and other administrative things took away some of the fun aspects, you might say it’s not my cup tea.
It’s way to little training with the animals, the whole challenging aspects has been removed. The max experience level is 5 and not 10 as before and the obstacle course is a bit disappointing and pretty clear just “thrown in” during the develop.
Verdict
Cats & Dogs expansion for The Sims 4 didn’t quite hit the mark with me personally, and that’s too bad as I was looking forward to this expansion. There was a lot more challenging features in the same expansion for The Sims 3. On the other hand there are a few positive sides with The Sims 4 version, as the pets have more personality and added a Veterinary Clinic where you can play as the vet.
