Larry Laffer is back, ladies and gentlemen! After some disastrous games like Magna Cum Laude and Box Office Bust, German Crazy Bunch has gotten the task of revitalizing the series and has made it all into a point-and-click game we all learned to love as youngsters. But how does Larry cope with the 21st century? Only one way to find out!

Story

“Hey ladies, I’m back in business! My new adventure, Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Don’t Dry, takes me – whatever the route or twist of fate – from the end of the ’80s directly into the 21st century and wow, how the world has changed! While my view of the world and women from way back in the 1980s collides with modern reality harder than the breasts of a lusciously stacked blonde jogging along a beach, I’m all set to date my way across the modern world!” – Larry Laffer

Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dream Don't Dry - (7)

The whole premise of Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry is to date Faith, the smoking hot assistant in Prune, the company behind the PiPhone, Timber and the likes. In order to do so, Larry needs to have a score of 90 on Timber. After all, she doesn’t get down with just anyone. This is basically all there is of the main story, at least until the end of the game, where Larry suddenly has some weird “time to be politically correct”-fetish going. This does mean that the script is very short, and there’s little main story to be found. There are some small side stories though. Unfortunately, there is some weird grammar here and there, which makes the dialogue between characters feel rather unnatural at times.

Graphics

With a hand-drawn style, Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry looks amazing. Larry has that weird charm. You know, apart from the fact that he’s a creepy guy who tries to get lucky with way too young girls. The world too feels complete and has a look that oozes the nightlife-style Larry sports.

Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dream Don't Dry - (1)

Another great thing about Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry is how smoothly it runs. I’ve yet to encounter any framerate drops, etc. And sure, you can say that this is because of the lack of realistic simulations, but that just wouldn’t suit Larry. He fits to be a two-dimensional character with that cartoony look, with exaggerated features. The fact that Larry’s original VA, Jan Rabson, makes a return doesn’t exactly take away anything from the game, either. The sound design is otherwise well made. The world features ambient noises, for example moaning from the rooms above the bar. The soundtrack itself does have a bit of an 80s vibe, which I did find a bit strange, at least in the beginning. Okay, so Larry is used to the 80s, but the rest of the characters are used to the 21st century, shouldn’t they listen to our times’ music?

Gameplay

Most of Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry revolves around solving puzzles and getting lucky with the ladies (or guys). In order to do so, you’ll have to help the person of interest with their problem. There’s not really any linearity, and you’re free to explore the town and the people you meet in the order you want.

The game has some typical point-and-click mechanics. You’ll have to pick up, combine, and use different items in order to solve the problems Larry faces. I must admit I had to have some luck in order to keep the game going, as several of the combinations felt rather random (Remember the rubber duck-puzzle from Longest Journey?). On the positive side, this does allow for some laughs over the developers’ creativity.

Controls

As a point-and-click adventure, just like its predecessors. Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry features a very simplistic control scheme. If you’ve played a point-and-click game before you’ll know exactly what to expect. Entering the inventory is easy peasy too, with scrolling the mouse-wheel. Otherwise, the game acts just as you’d expect, with selecting dialogue and actions with ease. The only complaint I have is the fact there’s no quick-save button, and that you do have to enter the menus in order to save.

Replay Value

The replay value is where Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry has its biggest issues. As far as I can see, you have to do pretty much everything in the game in order to get through the story. I mean, sure, there are lots of things to do, but once you’ve played through the game you’ve seen all it has to offer. There’s not really any optional things to do, at least that I’ve found in my playthrough, and that does make the game suffer.

Verdict

This was my first experience with Larry Laffer, and I must admit I enjoyed the game more than I thought. Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry uses the same recipe as the classic Larry-games, and it simply works. Point-and-click adventures are making a comeback, and Larry is showing how well it can be done! Sure, the writing can be better, and there are a lot of sexual jokes that might not work as well as intended, but all in all; do give this a go, even if you haven’t had any experiences with Larry before. Just be ready for lots of sexual chatter. Larry is back, even more sex-fixated than before.
