Bravo Team have received a lot of criticism and bad reviews throughout diverse media sites and YouTubers. And my previous review of Moss truly gave me an excellent VR experience, so can Bravo Team live up to my expectations?

Story

It’s easy to say that Supermassive Games haven’t had a lot of focus on the story in Bravo Team. To give you an example of how long the story is; 3-4 Hours with an AI partner / 2-3 Hours with an online partner.

You start by escorting a VIP until your car gets hit, the VIP being kidnapped and the only survivors are you and your partner. Your mission is to get to the extraction point alive, and that’s easier said than done. I struggled to keep track on the story during my playthrough, mainly because I didn’t find the story interesting and the bad voice acting didn’t help. And that’s a sad thing, because I had big hopes for this title. But story isn’t all, let’s dive into our next topic.
4/10

Graphics

Okay, let’s get rid of my negative experience with Bravo Team regarding the visuals and sounds. My first pointer is the bad voice acting performed by the “radio lady”, throughout the campaign a lady talks with you and your partner through a walkie talkie providing directions etc. I do believe that she is meant to sound stressed and determent, but instead sounds like pushed sentences as she truly hates her life.

Second pointer is the low texture quality and resolution. A lot of the texture and other visual aspects feels “half finished”. It might appear so because of the low resolution, I did play on my PS4 Pro, but still got low resolution on the VR headset. In normal tongue language: the video should have looked cleaner.

My third and final pointer is character design. It’s not that the characters isn’t great, but low in numbers. There isn’t much variety in enemies, and you and your partner are twins. (If you play as the same gender)

Beside those pointers, some of the visuals are great and stunning. And some of the level design are well created. Objects are almost naturally placed for covers.

Gameplay

Bravo Team is a strictly linear gameplay, even though there are some attempts to give the player a freedom of choice on how to approach the target. If you have played a game named Time Crisis you will feel a lot things to be the same in Bravo Team, except from one thing that stands out. In Time Crisis you’re brought automatically around between different scenarios where you as the player can go in & out of cover to shoot, but in Bravo Team you choose where and when to go as you please.

As you pick your next location a small third person cutscene shows us the approach. This idea is great and almost kills my motion sickness (something I most certainly experienced in Farpoint) completely, and it gives this genre a little bit of the extra. But sadly this is just great in the idea and some of the mechanics. I encountered a lot of animations drops in the cutscenes, my character (or my partners) often walked through walls or objects, and almost every single time ran in line of fire. The idea and mechanic is great, but the execution isn’t one hundred percent perfect.

I do got some mixed feelings about the gun mechanics, sometimes it’s brilliant and one of the greatest first person shooter experience I had in VR for while, and other times it’s the worst. I think most of the issues here is hardware itself, as the motion tracking isn’t top notch. But it is doable, Bravo Team can deliver an excellent experience especially with the PS Aim controller.

But some of the level designs gives the gun mechanics some difficulties as I was pretty sure I’d hit that enemy right in the head.
Bravo Team is for sure meant to be played with a friend or an online partner. The AI partner isn’t bad, but the experience is much better with a “live person”.

Controls

Another thing that’s certain is that Bravo Team is designed to be played with the PS Aim controller. Playing with the Aim controller provides the best experience, and from how the PSVR motion tracking system response it sure does its best. It is playable by using two PS Move controllers, this will give you a small feeling of reality and works just fine. But I must warn you, playing Bravo Team with the Dualshock 4 controller kills the experience.

Replay Value

Other than playing through the story in different difficulties, doesn’t Bravo Team provide a lot of replay value beside its Score Attack mode.
The only difference between playing the story mode and score attack mode is that you are trying to rack up some points by playing fast and killing enemies.

Verdict

Bravo Team delivers a fun and few challenging moments with the use of the PS Aim controller. But the replay value is a bit low, and the story is a bit too easy written and short. There are a lot of low resolution, but the choice of designing this game in this arcade cover to cover style in my opinion is a smart choice to reduce motion sickness.
