I’ve always loved Motocross games, from the not very good games to extremely good quality games. The main question is what do you expect from such a game? Should it be a type of arcade or should it be realistic? MXGP Pro aims to be more at realism this time, have they managed to achieve this?

Story

MXGP Pro comes with a career mode, one of which you can play through a championship or single race. So, there’s not exactly a storyline here except the one you create. And with that, I choose not to put any score on this category.

Graphics

There is one thing that really impressed me with MXGP PRO, the detailed courses during race and not least, the recently implemented free mode course. I will honestly admit that I do not know so much about how the courses themselves look in reality, but I would they’re very similar. 

The bikes are very well detailed (even the visible sponsors everywhere on the bike) and not least very clear Monster ads everywhere. But again back to the bikes, good little details of motocross parts, mud that gets stuck when you drive on wet courses. In fact, there are some good little details that make the whole experience so incredibly nice to look at.

What’s not so good is the modeling/sculpture of the rider and people around. It is extremely clear that this has not gotten the extreme makeover that it needs. But fortunately the characters are covered by well-detailed sponsor outfits and helmets.

Gameplay

Do not come here and expect a typical arcade motocross game similar to Trials Fusion or other type of arcade racing games. MXGP Pro is brutally difficult as they strive for realism in their gameplay. So you have to expect to fall off the bike, crashing into walls and not to mention, slip off the track a number of times. Me, who’s not quite experienced with the MXGP series from before, did struggle to get started and keep up with the top 10 during the races. But in return, when I finally got on top three and not least got my first win, it’s so incredibly rewarding.

As I mentioned during the story section, there are a career mode and an extreme career mode here. To put it like this, I’m good as it was with normal career mode with the ability to rewind all the time when I did something crucial during my races like falling off the bike or getting into a turn too fast and not least could save the progression as I would like. In extreme career, however, you lose all your benefits, zero rewind opportunity and saving points are set.
(So ​​for you satanists out there who love Dark Souls etc, try this!)

The multiplayer part, on the other hand, is something I was not so impressed with. At first I thought that the extremely long loading time it generally took under all of the menus in the game was the only annoying thing, I was wrong. The first experience I had with the multiplayer bit was to wait almost 20 minutes to find a match that was already running, which meant that I had to wait for about seven minutes for the race to finish. But when I finally got into the lobby and put my vote on the next course, the screen froze every other minute until I finally got into the race. The servers struggle a lot. It constantly “bumps” (lags), which is very game breaking.

Controls

We get a very detailed tutorial at the start of how the controls work in the game. I’ve only tried the PS4 version, but I would assume that the Xbox One version has a very similar setup, same with PC version if you connect an Xbox controller or PS4 controller to a PC.
Unfortunately, very often especially when I play on my PS4 Pro on a 4K TV, I experienced that response time was much reduced compared to when I played on a regular PS4 on a PC screen. And how much “balance controls” have to say during the races is very debatable.

Replay Value

I won’t say that there is much replay value here, even with a progression in career mode that gives you the opportunity to choose from different sponsors throughout the game. The more races you win, and more followers you receive, the better sponsors  you get. Multiplayer isn’t something I would have strived to come back to right yet. But again, MXGP Pro is a game I will come back to often, only to play one or two races between gaming sessions. To win a race is so incredibly personally rewarding.
