I’m a geek, and proud of it. I have spent countless of hours playing D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) with my friends in dark rooms, making tales as we went along. When new games based on the D&D System is released, it excited me quite a lot! It is one of the most solid RPG-systems ever made. Knowing the mechanics is just one part of the puzzle, though. The game has to be good as well.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker must not be confused with Pathfinder: Online. The system may be the same in the background, but it is developed by two completely different companies. Pathfinder: Kingmaker is based on a campaign in the original paperback Pathfinder-Game. I’ve never played the paperback version of this story, so the story is new to me.

Story

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is set in the Stolen Lands, a large region in the River Kingdoms. Heroes are gathered to help take down the bandit ruler currently holding the area, to bring peace and prosperity to the Stolen Lands. Your mission is to take over and build a Kingdom from scratch in this turbulent area.

As with most RPG’s, this is only the main mission and you will encounter several other quite large storylines along the way. All of your companions got their story as well, and will sometimes talk to your character about their wishes and needs.

pathfinder2

It is hard to know whether to blame the somewhat “standard RPG storyline” on the original adventure for the paperback game, or if it is the development team in Pathfinder: Kingmaker that is to blame, but the constant feeling of “I have seen this before” is very much present in loads of the material. I can’t say that it is bad, it just lacks originality.

Graphics

The graphics of the game are quite decent, and in some ways almost retro-inspired, something that is quite suiting for a game like this. You have the proper “Fog of war” that allow you to only see details that are right around you, everything else is darkened. You have the decent spell-graphics and the loading arts that you will be allowed to inspect in great detail.

Pathfinder4

Basically, it’s a high-resolution version of the early 2000 RPG’s that were released, like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Night. Luckily, games like this don’t rely on impressive graphics, and it is still visually pleasing, although a bit boring and dull at times due to the lack of variation.

Gameplay

Where do I start here… We all know the mechanic behind this game (D&D) is sound enough and where many games try to spare the player of the complex rules, numbers and countless stats, Pathfinder: Kingmaker lets the player in on all the little secrets. Creating a character here can easily set you back an hour or two, if you wish to read the information about the stats, all the different feats, checking how the class you chose will evolve while leveling and so on.

While I personally appreciate a good number-crunching session, the amount of details in Pathfinder: Kingmaker was almost overwhelming. I can see how someone not familiar with games like this can be properly confused and unsettled in their choices.

pathfinder-kingmaker

There was a whole smorgasbord full of small errors in the game I had made detailed notes about, only to discover that the developers had patched them all away yesterday and today. The rudeness! (Joking, I always appreciate developers fixing things fast)

One thing that also has to be mentioned, because it turned out to be my biggest problem with the game, is the pace. Everything takes aaaaages. Well, not really, but compared to what we all have gotten used to, the loading is slow and the 3 seconds it takes to cast a spell feels like an eternity, the characters walk slow and not to mention the progress in the game is quite slow. I might be extremely impatient, but I stick with my judgment of it being… Slow.

Controls

The controls in the game feel quite okay, nothing spectacular. You use the mouse a lot, clicking both for attacking and moving and the keyboard can more or less be put aside if you choose.

The mouse can be a bit annoying at times, though. Especially managing to click on the camp you made for resting instead of selecting one of your comrades and looting can prove to be more of a challenge than you’d like. All in all, I know there are limits of ways to improve. The accuracy just has to go get a bit better.

Replay Value

This is probably one of the best parts of the game, because you can choose to follow different paths at different times and end up with a different outcome. You can play through the game as a completely different class, and get a whole new experience. And the chance of you actually managing to find everything or explore everything fully is quite small, and you will encounter new things on your playthroughs.

This gives the game a nice edge where this is concerned. I also know for a fact that there are a LOT more in the Pathfinder universe that has not even been mentioned in this game, and I am looking forward to seeing what will be added as DLC or in patches, and how much we have to pay to get our hands on it.

Inferno is ready for Soulcalibur VI

0

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe is delighted to confirm that Inferno, the living incarnation of Soul Edge, will return in Soulcalibur VI – launching on 19th of October, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Inferno is the embodiment of Soul Edge’s will, a vile amalgamation of all the warriors’ souls it has claimed. Its motives for being are unknown. Some say it simply follows a desire to fight, maim, and gather souls. The eerie fire that surrounds Inferno is the result of the countless souls the sword has reaped being burned to sustain it.

Harvested from the souls it has collected, Inferno possesses a deep knowledge of all fighting techniques – allowing it to use any weapon style with a phenomenal degree of skill.

Though its power defies standard means of measurement – it easily transcends that of any of its previous vessels. Although Inferno’s look changes with every incarnation, rest assured that it is stronger and more brutal than ever!

Jiraiya joins Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker

0

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe is pleased to announce the addition of Jiraiya to Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Players that have purchased the Season Pass or that purchase the DLC1, will tomorrow unlock Jiraiya as a Master Character – giving them access to his move set, costume and weapons for their own in-game avatars. Additionally, Jiraiya will also be playable as a standalone character for free to all players.

One of the Hidden Leaf Village’s most powerful ninjas, Jiraiya brings some of his most powerful signature moves to the battle. Bring Down the House Jutsu calls upon a gigantic frog from the sky, which inflicts damage across a vast area and knocks back opponents. Another move, Ninja Art: Needle Jizo, sees Jiraiya harden his hair to create needle armour. This skill can be used for both defense and offense as it negates incoming attacks and inflicts damage in return.

Green Hell – Early Access Review

Name: Green Hell
Developer: Creepy Jar

Early Access Released: 28.08.2018
Initial Release Date: TBA

Green Hell is a survivor game, set in the amazonian rain forest, At first glance, the lush forest is a beautiful and tranquil place, however the struggle to stay alive is quite real. How long will you be able to endure in the wild?

Crafting the items you need, scavenging the forest for materials to help you stay alive and well, both physically and mentally, this game will offer a lot of challenges.  In a forest of Survival games – some quite excellent at that, can this small title stand out and make a mark for itself? Let’s find out!

The Good

The very first thing I have to say about this game is that it looks excellent. The graphics are very well made and details such as water and lighting effects are excellent. Some areas like the tented area and so on lacks some details, but this may be fixed later on.

The small part of the story that was available for play here was meant to be a tutorial for the game, teaching you how to do basic things like making a fire and tend to your wounds. This is a great way to get the hang of the basics, and works really well. I can’t say anything more about the story, really, because there is basically nothing to say about it. It will be released fully at a later date.

Another thing I noticed quite fast is that there is quite a variety of dangers out there to discover, and I bet that the game itself will not be easy at all. More or less anything in the jungle want you dead, and if you are not careful, most things can (and probably will at one time or another) kill you.

The Bad

It is very obvious that this game is still in early access. There are quite a few things that I found to be either annoying or just… weird.

The main thing that has to be addressed is the crafting system. It’s such a huge part of the game and it lacks intuitivity and feels quite hard to use at times. Maybe it is because it is quite realistic in the way the materials are sorted in your backpack or just my lack of short-term memory, but navigating to the items needed and getting it right was more troublesome than necessary.

Another thing I noticed is that is not at all obvious WHAT kills you all the time. In the stream you can see above, I was killed by a scorpion that I hardly noticed, even when looking for it. Sure, I heard something, but I had no idea what it was or where it was. Again I can take part of the blame here, and I am sure that issues like this will be sorted out before the game is released.

The main issue with the game is its lack of originality. I can’t really see what makes this game stand out and shine compared to other games that are established on the market. I hope that by the time the full game comes out, more will be added, but as of right now it is just a very beautiful game that uses things we have all seen before many times.

Is there a Harry Potter RPG in the making?

0

Reddit user VapeThisBro posted a small video that could indicate a new RPG game in our beloved Harry Potter universe.

It was one of those mall survey groups. I wasn’t allowed to have the camera. The signs in the lobby say no phones but no one checked me. The guys who did all the paperwork looked like they gave zero fucks about their jobs and were getting anyone and everyone who would do the viewing to do it. I got paid to watch it – VapeThisBro

It didn’t take long before Warner Bros. Interactive took the video down from YouTube. But many managed to watch it, even created a small GIF from it as well.

Is the mystery around Assassin’s Creed symbol solved?

0

Assassin’s Creed has launched a lot of games throughout the years, and their main logo or symbol has to be one of the most recognizable. But have you ever stopped and thinking about how they came up the idea of the symbol? How did they model it?

Reddit user degspt555 might be onto something here;
ac_logo_skull.png

Fans of the series know this symbol as the Assassin’s Insignia, and for years people, including myself have thought it might be a ‘hood’. But an eagle skull makes sense, right?

«The insignia was inspired in ancient Egypt by Medjay and Hidden One Bayek after he dropped an eagle skull necklace belonging to his murdered son in the sand, leaving an imprint.” – AC Wikia

This was actually revealed during Assassin’s Creed Origins!

Life is Strange 2 – Roads – Review

0

Name: Life is Strange 2 – Episode 1 – Roads
Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
Publisher: Square Enix
Released: 27.09.2018
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Reviewed on: PC
Acquired: A copy of this game was provided by a publisher for review purpose

Let’s be honest here; I adore Life is Strange. I love The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. The universe Dontnod has created is simply right up my alley. At Gamescom I got to speak with Michel Koch and Jean-Luc Cano about Life is Strange 2, and I couldn’t wait to try it out. Now I have and let’s just say that my expectations were high, so could Life is Strange 2 keep up?

Story

The game starts out a bit awkward by talking a lot about condoms (safe sex is important)… But after a few quirky moments, the story got really into that same Life is Strange-feel we’ve all learned to love. Let’s start out with the info, though; Life is Strange 2 regards the story of Daniel and Sean Diaz, two Mexican American brothers who needs to flee Seattle after “an incident”. The main parts of the game revolve around their journey south, to Mexico.

So, the episode starts out before “the incident” (which I won’t say what is, obviously – however, I don’t think it will be a massive shock once you get to that point yourself). This part of the story is quite slow, I’ll admit. And the first half hour or so did not have me convinced. Then all the action started happening, and I finally got into the more story intense part of the game. And my word does Dontnod know how to develop gut-wrenching stories! I had to stop at least five times to wipe away tears flowing down my chin. Where the first game was sort of non-political, Life is Strange 2 gets right into a split United States, especially when it comes to non-caucasians. Let’s just say you’ll suffer some difficulties supporting Trump after this experience (if you somehow did that before).

Life is Strange 2 - (2)
Being a big brother is tough

The brotherly love between Sean and Daniel really shines through as well, and before long it’s hinted that one of them might have some powers. Although not a big part of this episode, I can’t wait to find out what will happen with the powers further on.
9/10

Graphics

I really like the style that Dontnod keeps with the Life is Strange series. It’s not realistic, but it has charm and almost a cozy feel to it. It sort of feels like a good memory, if that makes sense? Life is Strange 2 builds on that experience, now running more smoothly than its predecessors. The facial animations too are better than before, and the textures too has gotten an upgrade. In addition there’s the whole world building – the world around Sean and Daniel feels real and is believable, even though there are some supernatural powers at play. Most of all though is the amazing character design, it literally took me two scenes to fall in love with the Diaz’ brothers, and I immediately felt strongly about each and every character they met. Kudos Dontnod, kudos!
8/10

Gameplay

Already here I have a huge dilemma. The gameplay in Life is Strange 2 is technically very sound, it works as a charm and now you have more than two choices each time. What I don’t like though is the lack of time travel. Sure, Max (the main protagonist from Life is Strange) should be the only one to have those powers, as it’s a rare occurrence. However, I feel like without a mechanic like this, Life is Strange 2 becomes just another “choose your adventure”-game. Where as the first game let you choose something, see its short-term consequences and then rewind to check the other options, Life is Strange 2 only allows you one try. And often times I found myself disappointed with what Sean actually said when I chose something.

Life is Strange 2 - (4)
Brotherly love

Fortunately, the rest of the gameplay is really awesome. Your actions truly seem to have consequences, and each choice has to be thought through properly. Sure, it might seem like a good idea to steal a tent now, but later on that might come and bite your behind. All in all, I am pleased so far and hope the developers might add in some cool feature once the story progress.
8/10

Controls

One thing’s for sure, story-heavy games doesn’t need the most advanced controls. Fortunately, this is something Life is Strange 2 has learned. You don’t need the most buttons to get things done, and the little controlling there is feel precise and to the point. Sure, there are some things what could be better, for example, I occasionally got stuck navigating the world, but it happened so rarely that I never really got annoyed by it.

9/10

Replay Value

Now, it is a bit difficult to say how good the replay value is after just one episode. The long-term consequences of my actions are yet to be seen, but on the short-term basis I constantly felt like replaying the episode to see how Daniel would react differently. Obviously the game has a story to tell, so some things are bound to happen regardless of your choices, but all in all I must say this feels like a more solid game than for example Telltale’s The Walking Dead, at least when it comes to replay value.
