It’s packed with hot cars, tons of heat, women in summer clothes and many fruits, what can possible be wrong?
Well, don’t get me wrong, this first sentence got me hyped as well, but this scenario is totally different. All-Star Fruit Racing is a kid friendly kart racing game, that might not be an excellent introduction to the genre.
Graphics
You might not get that wow realistic factor here, but hey, that’s not something you’ll think about when you launch this game. My first impression was blasted away with tons of beautiful colours and cute characters & animations. There are few things that I can be a little picky about, but the overall visuals are beautiful.
The cars themselves, even with a few limited customization abilities might not be so impressive. They got the fundamentals and the idea with blending fruit into kart racing, and I truly missed the opportunity to be more creative in the garage.

The music (when it finally appeared) sounded exotic, and that suits very well into this theme, but there are multiple scenarios where the music was gone. (Example: during the tutorial) The game felt empty and emotionless. The sound effects are fine, nothing special about those, and the horn is.

Gameplay
First things first, All-Star Fruit Racing have 11 different cups to earn in career mode within the five different worlds. (All of which is inspired by a fruit…duh…) And there is the Championship mode, where you can play a random mode and track from the career mode.

Each character in the game has their own special ability, not that I felt the special ability or “Ultra” was that special nor helped me during races (speeding boost to aggressive attacks). However, the one thing that actually stood out in a good way compared to other karting games such as Mario Kart is that we collect fruits to fill out different meters, instead of boxes with a random attack. Each fruit contains different attacks, you can combine fruits or use everyone to use your ultimate attack.
The mechanics in the game are very easy to learn, but you’ll need to learn them by yourself. There is a small tutorial in the game of the basic driving, but there is no explanation on how the different modes works, etc. As a hardcore gamer, or maybe a normal gamer you’ll might notice that your kart isn’t going that fast, that’s because the normal “speed” in this game is slow. On the positive side, you can focus more on handling your kart during drifting and collecting fruits for your attacks, the negative part is that it might lose the “adrenaline” emotions.
I haven’t got the opportunity to test an online race yet, not sure if the servers are down (PC version), I always got the message that there were no online sessions available. The positive side is that there is a split screen opportunity for local multiplayer.

Controls
As said, I played this game on PC. I used an Xbox One controller during my playthrough, as I found it much easier to play it that way. The controls are very easy to learn, and the schematics feel natural. The challenge here is to master the controls, and that might be a bit difficult as the handling in the game is a bit clunky.
7/10
Replay Value
There ain’t much replay value after you finished the career mode and unlocked the very few customization objects available. And that alone might feel a bit long-winded. I might pick this game up again when friends come over, or when I simply will play a game with local multiplayer.

Verdict
All-Star Fruit Racing is an excellent introduction for the “kart genre” for kids, might not fall into taste for us hardcore gamers, as the handling in the game is a bit clunky. The visuals are beautiful, but the sound effects might annoy you in the long run.
