The War Machine is the second multiplayer DLC released on Call of Duty WWII, giving us four new multiplayer maps. But also giving a new zombie map named “The Shadowed Throne”, taking us back to Berlin fighting against the zombies. I’ve played the new maps for some time now and is ready to give an opinion.
The War Machine contains the following:

  • Egypt
  • V2
  • Dunkirk
  • Operation Husky (War Map)
  • The Shadowed Throne (Zombie Map)

The Good

The star in this expansion of the three core multiplayer maps must be the Egypt map. This gives you the chance to use every play style you like, and every loadout is useful. For all its narrow corridors through ancient ruins, Egypt still has plenty of space on the two outer lanes for long-ranged shootouts. Egypt offers a great playground for hiding and seeks with plenty of options for tactical flanking and escapes thanks to its abundance of cover.

The new Nazi Zombies chapter, The Shadowed Throne, takes the team to Berlin as the zombie horde spreads. It’s not a big map, but every room is filled with interesting details, many of which are important to the Easter egg mission. It’s just as challenging to figure out as the last, but better in that multiple steps for different objectives can be done early on simultaneously.
The Shadowed Throne also introduces the Wunderbuss, a new weapon that’s great for eliminating hordes of zombies after it’s been charged by shooting a dart that sucks the energy out of a zombie. The three melee weapons –a nail bat, a combat knife, and a pickaxe made slaying zombies and scavenging the walking corpses for supplies early on better too.
V2. It offers plenty of flanking options that contribute to even more chaotic firefights around and in the tower in the center of the map, so it is at least an interesting map to fight on. The tower has several entrances and open areas above and below it where you can toss grenades or snipe in or out of the tower, making this map a lot less favorable to snipers, but very friendly to explosives.


The Bad

Both V2 and Dunkirk suffers horribly with spawning issues, with few spawn points and with a lot of players spawn killing it just ruins the experience. Dunkirk, in particular, is the worst, it’s just a narrow map with an open beach on one side and some houses on the other. Except for domination, the other modes aren’t very interesting. There is not much space to hide, and will often become run and gun matches.
Operation Husky is an okay map for War Mode, but the most disappointing thing is the aerial fighting. The space is too small, so often you will fly out of bound and explode. Airplanes controls fine, but with nothing more than machine guns to use. This is a bummer since it is so awesome if it worked. But instead it ends up as the most boring part of Operation Husky, and you often hope the round ends before that last part.

The War Machine’s new multiplayer content has some high points, but also its fair share of duds. I count the large, versatile Egypt map as one of my favorites. But with the two other maps and their problems and the disappointing aerial fight, it was a let down. But the solid zombie map makes up for it and helps this DLC to feel better.
