Doom Eternal – Review

Are you old enough to remember the good old fashioned 80’s and 90’s action movies?
If you either remember it or have seen such movies lately, well, that’s how I feel when I played through Doom Eternal.

Story

Let’s just get this out of the way at once, you’re not playing Doom Eternal for its storyline, the end. The thin red line is that demons have invaded earth, and you as the slayer has to stop the final destruction of humanity.

Most of the game’s story is by reading text logs you can locate on hidden spots throughout the various areas in Doom Eternal’s world. It didn’t take long before I was bored of reading long texts and wanted to rip and tear more demon blood again. There are some cool sequences with action-packed cutscenes, but the main story, however, is easily forgotten behind all of my carnage.

Graphics

There is no doubt that Doom Eternal is gorgeously ugly in a good way. Everything from its brutal gore animations to the looks of a hell on earth scenery. There are a limit amount of various character models, but the few ones we get it’s ugly delicious to demolish.

The slayer itself is even more badass now than ever, and it sure helps with this generation of video game graphics. Everything looks more polished and developers have the option to input a lot of great details and lighting.

We absolutely have to talk about the music composed by Mick Gordon, he managed to compile a lot of heavy metal vocalists inside a small room singing at once and then made an awesome remix that we hear within Doom Eternal’s main theme. (OST).

Gameplay

Singleplayer

Why is your boss like a demon? Well, its because they are always ready to fire your ass (ba dum tss) and that’s how it feels like battling against these demons. They really kick your ass and gives you a great of a challenge if you play on a higher difficulty, they are really fighting like their demonic boss is watching them from below. But with the newly added “glory kills” mechanics for our slayer which provides us with armor, health and armor depending on which “glory kill” we use (Chainsaw, melee attack or flamethrower) the hell on earth itself rip and tears up the demons. There is also added new customizable weapon mods, for example using sticky grenades on the shotgun or maybe use the shotgun as an auto rifle.

If you played Doom 2016, you might find a lot of similarities in Doom Eternal, but there is a small tweak added this time. Each enemy has their very own weak point that you can take advantage of, which grants us a small strategic playstyle instead of guns-blazing, especially as your ammunition count is also limited this time. So you’ll have to think twice how you approach each enemy. Do you have enough ammunition, which glory kill should you use on each enemy to have a stable income of armor, health, and ammo, and of, course, what type of weapon do you use?

The gunplay feels great, but the gameplay feels repetitive real fast even with these new mechanics. But when I think of it as a whole, this is what I want of a Doom title, just pure action challenge gore demon bloody demons to kill.

Battle mode (Multiplayer)

It is pretty clear that Doom Eternal is meant for the singleplayer. Even though Battle Mode is a good effort to add a small multiplayer. Battle Mode puts you in a match where two players play like demons and one plays as the slayer itself. (2v1 scenario). While the demons can summon in AI-controlled demons, block the slayers pick of ammo, health, and armor drops and set up traps, the slayer has a vast amount of weapons, the ability to use monkey bars and jump pads to aid him to victory. The battle mode is a great idea, but for now, it needs a lot more work on stabilization between the teams, weapons, and matchmaking between lower and high leveled players. (My first match online was against two level 30 players)

Controls

Doom Eternal is fast, it’s incredibly responsive, and you have a lot of options and keybindings to customize to improve your playstyle. The default schematics are easy to learn and “naturally placed” for PC players. The only issue I encountered was when I tried out the game with an controller on PC. The responsive experience I have with the keyboard and mouse was gone, the horizontal and vertical camera felt heavy to move and the gameplay pace felt a bit slower as well.

Replay Value

I think of Doom Eternal as a singleplayer experience, once you finish the story mode you’ll play it again with an insanely high difficulty to give you a satanic experience. (and maybe a new keyboard and mouse as well) There are hidden gems such as collectibles that have flashbacks to previous titles, and cosmetics to be earned and of course the 2v1 multiplayer.
